Obituary
LODI - Arlene Hovel has climbed the stairway to heaven. She died peacefully on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, in Madison, Wis., after an 18-month battle with lung cancer. Arlene will be remembered as a loving mother and partner, cherished friend, and avid churchgoer. She was always surrounded by friends and family, right up until her last breath.
Born in Baileys Harbor, Wis., Arlene was one of four siblings. She left home after turning 18 and moved to Milwaukee to find her place in the world. Arlene kicked off her professional career in food service, working at many Milwaukee restaurants including the Hoffman House and Marc’s Big Boy. She met many of her long-time friends during this time.
After a few years, Arlene packed her bags and relocated to Madison. She gave birth to a daughter, Rachel, in 1990 and the two made a home together. Arlene continued her career, working at Attic Angel and at several restaurants for more than 20 enjoyable years. She found fulfillment in serving her community through the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Arlene was a life-long member of the church. In 2014, she met and later married Steve Hovel, who believes it took 62 years to find his soulmate. The couple spent their retirement at their home in Lodi, Wis. Arlene will be sorely missed at family gatherings and events with friends. Her memory will not be forgotten.
Arlene is survived by her husband, Steven Hovel; her brother, Donald Gerlach; her daughter, Rachel Millar; and her nephew, Henry Gerlach Jr. She is predeceased by her brother, Henry Gerlach; and her sister, Barbara Ruth Gerlach.
A service will be held at the MADISON EAST SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH, 910 Femrite Dr., Madison, at 12 noon on Sunday, July 24, 2022. Lunch and a procession to the gravesite will follow. Visitation will be held at the church from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Sunday.

Arlene’s family would like to extend their gratitude to the nurses and team at Agrace hospice center. They went above and beyond in their care. A special thanks also to Sauk Prairie Hospital for taking in Arlene and caring for her in her final days.
