I’ll never forget the first time I met Melvin. He was a defensive lineman at Madison East and I was the quarterback for LaFollette. It was a big game between the rival schools and we were playing in front of a very full Warner Park stadium. On this one particular play I was back to pass and all I could see was Melvin charging at me. I let the ball fly just as he was planting his helmet in my chest and planted me into the ground! It hurt for a minute but we continued playing. That was our first introduction. We met a few more times throughout that evening but none quite like that first one! Roll forward a year or two and we both ended up working at American Family Insurance. We got to know each other through work and ended up teammates [which I preferred] on touch football, softball and basketball teams. Many years have passed since those days. I have always thought of Melvin as a great athlete but as I got to know him more over those years he was also a good person as well as a teammate. I am very saddened to hear of his passing and I want to extend my condolences to his family and friends. Rest In Peace my friend, Dave Grubb
