Obituary

MADISON - Florence May Smith died on Friday, May 27, 2022, at home, from natural causes. She was born to Julius and Florence Klingbeil in Racine.


Florence graduated from Green Lake High School and UW-Madison. In 1948, she married Erving Smith and they made Madison their home. They had three children who brought them much joy.


Florence was a helpmate in Erv’s part-time businesses and was an avid volunteer with children at Frank Allis School. She also worked in the Frank Allis Prairie and Oak areas. Florence enjoyed flower gardening, birdwatching and collecting agates. They both volunteered with Dane County Parks, with the Oscar Mayer READI group, and at Second Harvest Food Bank.


Florence is survived by her daughter, Diana (Dallas) Stenner of Chippewa Falls; daughter, Marcia Zimmer of DeForest; son, George (Anne) Smith of Plymouth; grandchildren, Aaron Stenner, Jason (Micaela) Stenner, Morgan Zimmer, Mason (Joy) Zimmer, Brian Smith, Jacquelyn Smith and Kevin Smith; and great-grandchildren, Connor and Reed Stenner, and Kenna, Gage, and Camber Stenner.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Erv; great-granddaughter, Bianca Stenner; and a sister and a brother.


A Celebration of Life will be held at OLBRICH BOTANICAL GARDENS, 3330 Atwood Ave., Madison, at 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 24, 2022.

So sorry I didn’t know she passed away. What a wonderful couple so thoughtful and sweet. Florence was room grandma for 2 of my kids and they connected with her at lake edge also. I spent many hours with Florence at church in book group and bible studies. And worked with both in the kitchen cookie and pie baking. Always there to help when I did annual stain glass candy making. I will miss her wonderful smile and support. Rest together in peace Florence and Erv
