MCFARLAND - Harley E. Spilde, age 82, passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2022, at Agrace HospiceCare. He was born on Jan. 31, 1940, the son of Helmer and Eleanor Spilde.   


Harley graduated from East High School in 1958.  After graduation, he played semi-pro hockey for the Wagon Wheel Cardinals in Rockton, Ill. He served in the U.S. Army from 1963 until 1965.   


Harley was united in marriage to Linda Starkweather on Sept. 29, 1962, at Trinity Lutheran Church. In 1966 Harley started with the Madison Fire Department where he served for 31 years. A proud achievement for Harley was being a member of the department’s first Hazardous Materials team. Harley retired in 1997 as lieutenant. Harley also was an area representative with the American Scandinavian Student Exchange Program and a member of the American Legion Post 534, McFarland. He was an avid fisherman, passionate Badgers fan but most of all loved being with his family.


Harley is survived by his wife, Linda Spilde of McFarland; children, Eric Spilde of Sacramento, Calif., Thor A. (Tracy) Spilde of McFarland, Kirsten Spilde Tess of Bloomington, Ill., and Britta Spilde of Palm Springs, Calif.; brother, Charles (Joyce) Spilde; sister, Anne L. Spilde: grandchildren, Thor Spilde Jr., Berit Spilde and Josef Tess and Eli Tess; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and son-in-law, Robert J. Tess.


A memorial service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31, 2022, with Pastor Andy Twiton presiding. Family and friends who wish to view the services via LIVE STREAM may visit Harley’s obituary page at www.gundersonfh.com and click on the Live Webcast link at 1 p.m. on Tuesday. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Tuesday.


The family would like to thank the staff of Nazareth Health and Rehabilitation Center and Agrace HospiceCare for all of their wonderful care and support given to Harley and his family.

I’ve known the Spilde family since we became neighbors about 1950. Harley was three years older than me but he always would include us youngsters when playing hockey at Olbrich park. He was a great teacher of the game and a good friend as well. My condolences to the entire Spilde family. Remember and share the great memories y’all have of Harley….he was a good man. Bill Pickarts
