Fitchburg - Janice A. “Jan” Brassington, age 64, of Fitchburg, passed away on Thursday, May 19, 2022, at Agrace HospiceCare. She was born on June 16, 1957, in Madison, Wis., the daughter of Edward A. Leslie and Maude E. (Allen) Leslie.


Jan graduated from Madison West High School­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­.  She married David Brassington on Sept. 4, 1981, at Christ Presbyterian Church in Madison. Jan enjoyed a career working in Quality Patient Safety at UW Hospital for over 30 years.


Jan loved being a mom and enjoyed being a part of her son’s bands - being backstage and always being their number one fan. In her free time, she enjoyed being with her dogs and riding her horse, Blizzard. She liked antiquing and going to garage sales. She appreciated nature and artwork, and being at her grandparents’ farm in Caledonia. Spending time with family and enjoying family vacations - especially to Mexico and St. Germain - brought her great joy. She enjoyed baking, especially at Christmas, which was her favorite time of the year.


Janice is survived by her husband, David; son, Zach Brassington; brother, Tom (Ellen) Leslie; sister, Barbara (Frank) Sandberg; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter; and her father-in-law, Lynn and Dorothy Brassington.


A celebration of life will be held at FUNK’S PUB, 5956 Executive Drive No. 101, Fitchburg, from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 18, 2022. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Jan was a true pioneer. She was bold and brave but always had a smile and kind words. She was instrumental in helping lead UW Health's safety and quality journey during a very different time than we are in now---today, patient safety and quality of care are core missions, supported by a large infrastructure and an educated workforce, and Jan, with a small group of colleagues and few resources, got us there. Her impact on patient safety is unmeasurable, her efforts then continue to save lives today. She leaves a legacy of safety and quality professionals who, though they maybe never had the honor to know her, carry on the efforts she started. She is and will continue to be missed.
