Obituary

MOUNT HOREB - Martin Leo Richardson, age 81, of Mount Horeb, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2023, at Ingleside Manor. He was born on Oct. 2, 1942, in Commerce, Mich., the son of Arthur and Irma (Currin) Richardson.

Martin graduated from Spencerian College in Milwaukee. He served his country honorably in the National Guard during Vietnam. Martin met Ruth Schulien-Richardson on a blind date in 1980 and they had a lot of fun. Martin and Ruth married in Madison, and the fun lasted throughout their nearly 40-year marriage.

Martin worked in sales for Ameritech. Six months out of the year he traveled away from home to provide for his family.

Martin grew up on the water. He loved boats. He chartered a boat named “Miss Irma,” named after Grandma Irma who treated Ruth like a queen. Martin was a coffee enthusiast and occasionally enjoyed some Maker’s Mark. Being on the farm and spending time at home doing things brought him joy. He was passionate about golf, both playing and watching. He kept his clubs at the nursing home so he could keep them clean.

Above all, Martin was a great family man. He taught his children, Renee and Mark, everything they needed to succeed as adults. He attended all of their sporting events and was their number one fan. Martin was also a doting grandfather. He would get on the floor and play with the grandkids even though he was in pain and would need assistance with getting up. Martin was an attentive and loving husband. He often asked the kids “where’s your mom,” because he missed her when they were apart. Martin was extremely proud of his family and their accomplishments. He was simply a great guy.

Martin is survived by wife, Ruth; son, Mark (Alexa) Richardson; daughter, Renee Richardson; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Irma Richardson.

I had the great pleasure of getting to know Marty while he was at Ingleside. He would always greet us with a “hey buddy”, was always motivated, friendly, and shared a great sense of humor! He will be greatly missed! Alyssa Johnson

Marty had a warm way about him, and his contagious smile could light up a room. He loved his family, and he made his friends feel like they were family. He was a good man, indeed. May the perpetual light shine upon him, O Lord; may he rest in peace. Amen.

I’ve known Marty and Ruth for a long time but would only see them twice a year. I rent space in their barn to store my boats. I only see them when I drop my boats off in the fall and pick them up in the spring. The beautiful drive out to their place was always a highlight for me. We would briefly visit when I came out and I was always impressed with their warmth and kindness. I will miss Marty and I send my sincere condolences to Ruth and the family. Dan Larson
