Obituary

MADISON - Sharon Lee Kauffeld, age 77, of Madison, Wis., passed away on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, after a brief battle with cancer.


Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, Achiel and Mary Van Durmen (née Susits) of Mishawaka, Ind.; and her husband, George Kauffeld.


She is survived by her brother, Achiel “Bob” Van Durmen, Jr.; sons, Jeffrey, Jason (Giselle), Trevor (Beth) and Christopher (Cynthia); and grandchildren, Madeleine, Owen, Evan, Abigail, Ashna, Isabel and Chancellor.


Sharon worked for the City of Madison IT department for close to 50 years, retiring in 2019. She loved her children, her grandchildren, dogs, reading, puzzles, cards and board games (which she hated to lose), collecting Hallmark ornaments and Snoopy. Sharon also loved any excuse to bake and will be disappointed to not see how the series Yellowstone concludes.


Sharon was generous and giving. In lieu of flowers or gifts, please make a donation in her memory to an animal shelter, a local food pantry, cancer research, or a children's hospital.  Her sons will be spreading her ashes on her parents’ farm in Indiana.


A memorial gathering will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, Wis., from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2022. At 3:30 p.m. we invite people to share individual stories or memories of Sharon.  If you are unable to attend the memorial in person, please feel free to share a story or memory on Sharon’s obituary page at www.gundersonfh.com.

It was surprising and sad to hear of Sharon’s passing. I saw her not long before her death when stopping by the house to pick up Girl Scout cookies from her granddaughter, Ashna. Thinking about Covid and her possible knee repair, I said when these things get sorted out we need to get together for dinner or something. Sharon was always welcoming when she and George – my first cousin – lived out near Highway 12 and then when they bought the house on Johnson St. I saw the boys growing up and felt part of the extended family at picnics and family dinners and on flea market expeditions. Saw a bit less of them after getting married , but my wife, Alison, got to know and like Sharon and the whole family. Sharon could be a fairly dramatic figure and talking to her on the phone could strain one’s ears – no hearing aids needed! She certainly could keep George in line. We will all miss her. I worked for the City of Madison for nearly 30 years, most of it as Payroll and Purchasing clerk for the Police Department. As such, there were seemingly never-ending changes to our systems and we would never have been successful in especially getting payroll done without the continual assistance of Sharon. She was always very helpful, coming in on days off and making sure things ran smoothly. The entire success of so many IT functions is and was directly attributed to her expertise and willingness to help us - again and again! She was an exemplary employee.
