Lois Mae Iverson

Lois Mae Hammerly Marty Iverson, passed away on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at the Bee Hive in Mount Horeb. She was born on March 28, 1927, in Monticello. Lois was the great -granddaughter of one of the original Swiss settlers in Wisconsin and was raised on the farm built by her great-grandfather, a dairy farmer and cheesemaker. Lois attended the Babler one-room schoolhouse for her early years and then graduated from Monticello High School.

In 1945, Lois moved to Madison to attend Madison Business College.  In 1947 she married her high school sweetheart, Clarence Marty.  They lived in Madison and Lois worked at Wisconsin Power and Light where she was proud to be the first woman to qualify for her position.  Lois stayed home while her children were young, then took a secretarial position in the Madison Metropolitan School District to share her children’s schedule. Lois and Clarence loved to travel. They took many trips as a family throughout the U.S.  After their children were grown, they traveled to Switzerland numerous times and continued to travel throughout the U.S. to camp, hike, rockhound and birdwatch.

Lois was by Clarence’s side during his long illness, sleeping every night on the floor of his hospital room.  After his death, she continued their love of travel.  She visited Australia, Japan, China, and Europe.  Later, Lois met and married her second husband, Carroll Iverson.  They loved to dance and were frequently seen at the New Glarus Hotel dancing to their favorite Swiss polka bands. They lived in Mount Horeb until his death.

Lois is survived by her son, Donald Marty of Verona; daughter, Cheryl (Timothy) Feagans of Pennsylvania; grandsons, Bryan Feagans of Massachusetts and Evan Feagans of California; and great-granddaughter, Elena Feagans. Lois was predeceased by both of her husbands; her parents, Fred and Maud (Legler) Hammerly of Albany; and her brother, Ralph Hammerly of Monticello.

A special thanks to the team of private caregivers who were by Lois’s side all day, every day.  They advocated for her, held her hand, brought her favorite treats, and loved her.  Thank you, Sarah Jacobson, Julie VonEschen, Lynette Sutter, Lisa Mahoney, Aly and Kristen Seibel, Taya Amidon and Hannah Stapleton.
