Obituary

I am sad to announce the passing of Curtis M. Haugen. Curt passed away at home on Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2022, at the age of 74.

Curt was born on Dec. 29, 1947, to Lucille and Maynard Haugen in Warren, MN. He grew up in northern Minnesota before moving to Minneapolis where he spent many years of his life. Curt received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Minnesota. He then used his degree to pursue a career and lifelong passion as a security professional. Curt was very proud of his time in the FBI as well as the Security Consulting firm that he created and ran for several years. While working on a security project in Wichita, KS, he met his wife, Marilyn. They married in 1987. Seven years later in 1994 Marilyn and Curt were blessed with the birth of their only daughter, Natalie. While he had fond memories of Minnesota his heart truly belonged to Madison, WI where he moved with Marilyn and Natalie in 2005. Curt worked for Cardinal Health delivering medicine to many hospitals around Wisconsin. He found passion in this work and spoke very highly of his coworkers. He remained in Madison for the rest of his life and will stay there in death.

Ask anyone what the most important thing in Curt’s world was and they will tell you his daughter, Natalie. He would talk about her to anyone who would listen. She was his pride and joy. Curt was very proud that she had pursued the career of her dreams as an Emergency Medicine Physician. A close second favorite in Curt’s life was Natalie’s dog, Finnigan. He loved taking him for daily walks and showing him off to everyone in town. Curt also loved spending time with his best friend, John. Together they had so much fun taking the boat out on Madison lakes and going out for Friday night fish fry. Together they were the quintessential “old-fart” duo. Marilyn and Curt were also an important duo in his life. They were married but they were more importantly friends. They spent a lot of time sharing meals together and exploring the many activities of the Madison area. Recently Curt has also found enjoyment in going to bingo and other group activities with his friends at his senior living facility. Curt brought joy to all of these people’s lives and so many more. He will be greatly missed.

There will be no service or burial at this time. Our family has chosen to have Curt’s remains placed into a Living Urn that will grow into a tree. The tree will be planted on a lakeside property in Madison that Curt adored. A memorial of Curt’s life will occur next summer when the tree is planted. Details will be provided.

We understand that everyone is grieving with our family and thus please do not feel obliged to send condolences. If you do wish to send a condolence, please mail to: Gunderson Funeral Home, 7435 University Ave., Middleton, WI 53562. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Our deepest sympathy Natalie on the passing of Curt. Some memories of Curt in our younger years were him giving me rides on a sleigh pulled by a horse in the winter time, at his family’s farm. Curt was fun to be with and always was active. Being he was a little older than me, I always had respect for him and enjoyed his companionship. When he moved to Minneapolis, I think he was working for the FBI at the time, I went to see him. He took me to a lake in the cities and we were riding on some type of flat boat, he had made, that skimmed across the lake. I didn’t feel too safe on it, but we had fun. When Curt would call, send cards or emails, he would always inform us about your, achievements and the activities, you were involved with. Natalie, you were his bright shining star and he was so proud of what you achieved. Life seems to go by so fast and I will cherish the memories that I had with Curt as I know you will cherish your memories of Curt, too. You are in our prayers and I pray that God will give you strength during this season of your life. Grant & Kathy Haugen

I enjoyed the time I spent as one of Curt's coworkers at Cardinal Health. We had not worked together for awhile, but he was a very friendly face for a new Wisconsinite, with interesting stories to tell and a smile and good joke just waiting to be shared. He will no doubt be missed by many, myself included.

Oh, my dear friend, may you rest in peace. Thank you for the numerous chats, laughs, hugs, smiles, treats when you came to our ER to deliver meds. Somewhere in those years you became a true friend to many of us and certainly were a positive thing to look forward to. You are one of a kind and I know I am not alone to say I am blessed to be able to call you my friend. No doubt by now you have made many friends in heaven, because that is just who you are. Sending condolences to your loved ones, especially Natalie, whom you spoke so highly and proudly of every chance you could. Godspeed, Curt. Save me a spot up there!
