Obituary

FITCHBURG - Glenn Dee Harwell, 77, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2022, at home in Fitchburg, Wis. He was born on Oct. 27, 1944, the son of Forrest Hardin Harwell and Kathryn Taylor Harwell of Burkburnett, Texas.

Glenn attended Kemper Military School in Booneville, Mo., where he formed many treasured memories and close relationships with his classmates. In 1968, he graduated from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, with a bachelor’s degree in business.

Glenn was known for his quick wit and sense of humor. He also had an adventurous spirit. Glenn was a private pilot, and loved road trips, duck hunting and white-water rafting. He resided in Colorado for 20 years where he looked forward to college sporting events and skiing with Shae and Courtney when they attended Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo.

The only thing Glenn loved more than majestic Colorado were his three daughters-Jennifer, Shae and Courtney. He took extreme pride in their many accomplishments. Later in life, Glenn worked part time as a driver. He enjoyed talking to every stranger that he met and loved to tell his over ten thousand passengers about his dynamic family.

In 2021, Glenn and his adored cat, Casper, moved from Colorado to Wisconsin to be close to Courtney. He treasured this time with his grandkids who he cleverly named the ‘Bumblebees’ because they never stopped buzzing around.

Despite living in several states, Glenn remained a true Texan at heart. He never turned down a chance to indulge in Tex-Mex, a scoop of Bluebell Buttered Pecan ice cream or a juicy Whataburger.

Glenn is survived by his three daughters, Jennifer (Lane) Miller of College Station, Texas, Shae Harwell (Will Abernathy) of Katy, Texas and Courtney (Justin) Wyatt of McFarland, Wis.; his eight grandchildren, Maddie, Ellie, Leah, Matthew, Kathryn, Ryan, Dillon and Ellison. He is also survived by his brothers, Guy Harwell and Gary Harwell; numerous cousins; and his “exes from Texas,” Mary Kay Harwell and Johnnie Lyons.

Private services will be held this summer in the mountains of Colorado. The family wishes to thank the many amazing healthcare professionals in Madison that cared for Glenn over the past year and the caring individuals at Fitchburg Senior Center and Meals on Wheels.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to your local Meals on Wheels organization in memory of Glenn Harwell. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Met Glenn at a Kemper reunion a few years ago. Glenn was the kind of guy that was a friend from the first handshake. He was kind of like an old pair of gloves, a perfect fit. I looked forward to seeing him at reunions and our text messages. Glenn was a fine example of a Kemper Old Boy and we will miss him! Ken Burrows KMS 1955 - 1958

One of the times I got to see your dad was when we took a train ride in Georgetown together with our girls. He loved the mountains and he said this train ride was on his bucket list. He loved being able to sit and take in the mountains. I feel lucky to have been with you all on one of his bucket list items. Afterwards, we ate lunch by the river and listened to the water rushing by. He always had a story to tell about all of the places he'd been and seen. He loved Colorado! I love that we both shared that same love of the mountains. Sorry for your loss!

Hey Papa Smurf, this place is really real. :) This poster was hanging up in one of his hospital rooms and I told Glenn about the trip that Justin, Dillon and I took to Bayfield, WI. He said he kept looking at the poster wondering if it was a real place or a fake poster. I miss you, Pops. I love you. This place is kinda boring without you. xoxo

Glen and I shared many things in common. Both born in the same month and year just days apart. We both went to Kemper at the same time, although in different Companies, graduating the same year. We were both private pilots among other life events. We were together at his last Kemper reunion where we shared a number of KMS memories. He always spoke so fondly of his children. I will miss our conversations and shared memories. Rest in peace my friend.
