Obituary
MADISON - Betty Delores St. John, age 94, of Madison, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2022, at Meriter Hospital. She was born on Oct. 27, 1927, the daughter of Percy and Ida (Hansen) Spaulding. Betty married Dale St. John on Nov. 28, 1946, in South Beloit, Ill. They celebrated 72 years of marriage prior to Dale's passing in 2019.
Betty graduated from South Beloit High School. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed cooking, baking (especially her yummy sugar cookies), sewing and outdoor activities. Betty and Dale loved to travel, their favorites being Norway, and their many cruises.
We all have many cherished memories of family gatherings and yummy meals cooked on the wood stove in their cabin in up-north Wisconsin. Betty's faith in God carried her throughout life and to her last days. She volunteered countless hours at Madison General (now Meriter Hospital), St. Stephen's Lutheran Church (Monona), and Oakwood Prairie Ridge (Madison East). Betty was always promoting education of women, through her 50+ year membership of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, in which she held several leadership positions.
Betty will be greatly missed by her son, Stanley (Jean); daughter, Sherri Jo (Michael); and son-in-law, Gregg Coplien; seven grandchildren, Joshua (Erin), Mitchell (Rebecca), Kevin (Megan), Heather (Kenny) Strand, Amy (Chris) Mulcahy, Tracy Coplien and Ashley (Andy) Johnson; 11 great-grandchildren; her brother, Kenneth (Barb) Spaulding; and many nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dale; a son and daughter, Dennis and Dawn Coplien.
A memorial service will be held at OAKWOOD TREE OF LIFE CHAPEL, 5565 Tancho Drive, Madison, Wis., at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 27, 2022, with Pastor Wayne Shannon officiating. Masks are required.
