Obituary
MCFARLAND - Michael Anthony “Mike” Burie, age 79, of McFarland, died early Monday morning, Feb. 7, 2022, at Del Webb Hospital in Sun City West, Ariz.
Mike was born on Nov. 2, 1942, on the family farm in rural Columbus, the son of Frank and Luella (Young) Burie. He was a 1960 graduate of Randolph High School and after high school, enlisted in the U.S. Army. Most of Mike's enlisted time was spent in Germany. Mike moved to Madison after returning home from Germany and spent almost his entire career working for the Madison School District. At his retirement in 2000, Mike was Director of Management Information Services for Madison Schools.
Mike and Sandy (McMahon) were married in 1966, and lived in Madison, Sun Prairie, Stoughton and, since June of 2021, McFarland. Mike was an avid sports fan and competitor. He enjoyed playing football in high school and went on to play golf, softball, racquetball and pickleball in his adult life.
Mike also coached 7th and 8th grade football in Sun Prairie for over 12 years. But... golf was his real passion, and he LOVED the game. Mike and Sandy have been members of Stoughton Country Club for over 30 years, and they wintered in Sun City West, Ariz., so they could play golf all year long.
Along with all of Mike's own activities, there was always time to drive to and watch all his children's and grandchildren's many events. His kids and grandkids were the light of his life.
Mike will be greatly missed and mourned by his wife, Sandy (McMahon) of McFarland; his children, Michael of Sun Prairie and Becky (Dan Denniston) of Marshall; his three grandchildren, Cole, Sydney and Ellie; his siblings, Frank Jr. of Florida, Dan (Gae) of Waukesha, Rose Hicks of California, Bill (Karen) Burie of New Hampshire, and Ed (Gerry) Kerwell of Appleton; and many other relatives and friends, both in Wisconsin and Arizona.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Lloyd and John; and his sisters, Vivian Gaffney-Dover and Leila Kerwell.
A memorial service will be held at GUNDERSON STOUGHTON FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 1358 Highway 51 N. at Jackson St., Stoughton, at 3 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 21, 2022.
