Obituary

MARSHALL - Alan J. “Al” Derus, age 65, passed away unexpectedly from cardiac issues on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2022. Al was born on March 13, 1956, in Madison, Wis., the son of Gerald and Elizabeth (Blackbird) Derus.

Al was united in marriage to Sandy (Sherman) Peterson on May 22, 1992, in Hawaii. He graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 1979 and went on to have a successful career in sales for Patterson Dental, retiring in 2014. Al also volunteered for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dane County. He had a passion for snow skiing, golfing, competing in triathlons and several Ironman events. Al enjoyed spending time at the cottage in the north woods, no matter the season. After retirement, he spent a lot of time in Naples, Florida. He loved the sunshine and the ocean. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He touched the lives of many people and left a positive impression.

Al was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Elizabeth Derus. He is survived by his wife, Sandy; stepmother, Darlene; sister, Gail (Tom) Krekel; brothers, Steven (Sandy), Kevin (Vicki), Jeffrey (Laurie), and Michael (Tamala); nieces and nephews, Christy, Sarah, Lindsay, Ryan, Katelyn, Nathan, Nicholas, Adam, Alex, Julia, Jennifer, Jeffrey and Emilee who all adored and loved their Uncle Al.

A visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 9 a.m. until 12 noon on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2022. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dane County. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

My heartfelt condolences to the Derus family. Al was an incredible personality and impacted all who were blessed to have known him. He was my roommate in college and was always there with a laugh and a smile. I can’t believe he is gone but he most certainly will not be forgotten. Kent Davidson

Like many 'Grovers', one of my many fab connections to Al was his Pop, " Doc" who delivered me. Al was an awesome pal and one of my best buddies growing up. I can remember like it was yesterday the many grand outings on the links, slopes, and lakes. In March 1975, we were lucky enough to have our amazing Mothers' send us out to CO. We skied Aspen hard for a week. I always struggled to keep up with him! We were in rare form when a guy in our hotel showed up pool side with a complete bar set up in his brief case! And, I will always cherish and remember the great parties, band nights, and our boxing matches in the driveway at the very busy Derus compound. While always the smallest guy, he was the biggest competitor! To all the D family: May just the thought of knowing that so many good friends truly care ease your pain. Rest in Peace Al. Hello, My name is Debbie Carlson. I worked many years at Winter Dental office in Janesville, WI. I was the ordering person and Al was our Patterson rep. I sure enjoyed my time getting to know Al with the ordering I did with him through Patterson and also sharing our journeys through physical fitness. He would train and do triathlons and iron man competitions and I led an aerobics class for many years as a volunteer service/ministry at my church in Janesville. We shared how we were training and staying in shape to keep doing the things we both loved. I went with a group of Winter Dental friends many times to see Kevin Derus play in his band, Axel Grease, in various bars and venues in Madison. Al encouraged us to go see the band and we were never disappointed when we did with a lot of dancing, laughter and maybe some beer was involved!!! 🍻 My heart is so sad to hear of his passing. I haven’t seen Al in many years and was happy to read that he retired and enjoyed his time in Florida for what seems too short of a time in retirement. He touched MANY LIVES, mine included, and even if we hadn’t seen each other after I left Winter Dental and worked for another office in Sun Prairie, when I would occasionally bump into him in Madison, we were able to visit and enjoy some fun banter as if a day hadn’t passed by since we’d seen each other last. Again, my heart is so, so sad to hear this news. I would like to send my deepest sympathies to Sandy, whom I always thought was an Angel to be married to Al ( and I would tell him that) and to Kevin to whom I was blessed with having as my ER doctor at Mercy Hospital when I had to go in after a domestic abuse incident. Thank you Kevin for sitting with me all night to care for me and generously gave me a ride back to my home the next morning when he was off work in his sweet sports car. If I hadn’t met Kevin through Al’s encouragement to see Axel Grease, I wouldn’t have know that ER Physicans who cared for me so well. As bad as the incident was for me, I felt very blessed to know Kevin because of Al. It is as if God himself brought those Derus brothers to me. Rest In Peace Al. I hope you’re doing a triathlon in Heaven with Jesus as your coach!!❤️
