Obituary

MADISON - Roberta Martin, age 79, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2022, with family by her side. Roberta was raised in Connecticut. She married her best friend, Jim Martin, in 1967, and together they had one daughter, Kimberly. The family moved to Madison, Wis., in 1978 and grew to love the community.

Roberta received her diploma, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees in nursing. She worked as a critical care nurse for several years and went on to establish the Middleton/Cross Plains Area School District health services program in 1989, where she led the department for 20 years. Roberta truly enjoyed helping people and was well suited for her calling as a nurse.

Roberta’s greatest joy was being a mother to Kimberly, and she created a close-knit, loving family. She was a devoted and proud mother who was always present. Roberta loved to travel and while her journeys took her across the globe, her adventurous spirit was most energized when camping. She was an outgoing person who truly enjoyed connecting with others; from those in her social networks, to those she volunteered with at the Attic Angel Association, Roberta always took a genuine interest in the lives of the people she knew.

Roberta is survived by her husband, Jim; daughter, Kimberly; granddaughter, Lauren; sisters, Marilyn and Lois; and countless friends she met and remained close with over the years. Roberta will be remembered for her persistent grace, caring nature, strong will, and determination against all odds. Throughout her brave battle with cancer, she was a force of courage and strength, and she never gave up hope.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. THOMAS AQUINAS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 602 Everglade Drive, Madison, at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 28, 2022, with Father Bart Timmerman and Monsignor Michael Gorman concelebrating. Burial will follow. Visitation will be held at the church from 11:30 a.m. until the start of Mass on Friday.

We always enjoyed chatting with your Mom when we took walks in the neighborhood. Also at the Middleton pool. She was thoughtful, along with Kim in passing on Laurens clothes to our granddaughter. Please accept our condolences. Marsha and Jim

Roberta was a woman of grace and confidence and she took great pride in being the Direct of Health Services for the Middleton Cross Plains School District. She hired me as a School Nurse and I learned so much from her. She cared greatly about her Health Services Team and the children in the District. She would often talk so proudly of you, Kimberly and then she was so thrilled to become Grandma. After she retired we kept in touch through letters and phone calls. Her recent Christmas card shared wonderful appreciative words about Jim and Kimberly - how you both were taking such good care of her. After Roberta retired- I said to many people how blessed I was to work under her. She was an inspiring Leader and I was able to follow her foot steps as Director of Health Services at MCPASD all because she inspired me and taught me well. Such a strong and brave woman. Hugs to you all- Blanche
