Obituary

MADISON - Rex Mapanao Dulay died unexpectedly in his sleep at home in Madison, on Monday, Dec. 6, 2021, at the tender age of 48. But his life started halfway around the world when he was born to Imelda Mapanao and Calixto Dulay, Jr. in Cotabato, Philippines.

Growing up, Rex loved to tinker with everything and was always motivated to excel in school. He was the valedictorian in elementary and high school. Inspired by his older sister who was a nurse, he went on to study nursing himself at Notre Dame University in Cotabato.

While pursuing a master's degree in nursing at Ateneo de Davao, he bravely decided to embark on a new journey when he accepted employment as a registered nurse at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison, Wis., in 2003. He found this calling rewarding and fulfilling as he was able to help countless numbers of people at the hospital for the last 18 years.

His life took another fortuitous turn when he met and fell in love with Rowena (nee Bayo), also a nurse. The two got married in the Philippines in 2009. Shortly after that, Rowena joined Rex in Madison, and they promptly started a family. Rex’s happiness was undoubtedly centered on family life with Rowena and their daughters, Isabelle Victoria and Margaux Olivia. Doting on his three "girls," he thoroughly enjoyed being a husband and a father. As a family, they were fond of going on road trips across the USA and returning to the Philippines to visit relatives and friends.

Rex never stopped being an avid DIYer, often using such talents to help friends and neighbors. He also had a green thumb, but he was aided by his little girls in tending their gardens that produced bountiful vegetables and flowers without fail every year. He loved to crack jokes and was a humble, soft-spoken person, belying his kindness and generosity with everybody.

Rex is survived by his wife, Wheng, as Rex called her; daughters, Isabelle Victoria and Margaux Olivia; mother, Imelda; siblings, Calixto III (Haidee) and children (Imelda Christine and Calixto IV), Rhodora (Melchor) Abejero and children (Sophia Marie and Doreen Ayne), Twinkle Dulay, and Leland (Cheryl) and children (Lencey and Leyan); and the Bayo family, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Calixto Jr.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. DENNIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Road, Madison, at 5 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 13, 2021. Family and friends who wish to view the Mass via LIVE STREAM may visit Rex’s obituary page at www.gundersonfh.com and click on the view Live Webcast Link at 5 p.m. on Monday. Visitation will be held at the church from 3 p.m. until the time of the Mass on Monday.

“Ni Apo Dios ti mangkuyog kenka, Rex.” May you rest in peace.

I started working on D6/5 with Rex as a CNA in 2003. I was a very timid & impressionable 18yo. I was fortunate to work nights with Rex, Richard, Mavic, Myrene, Dolly, & Hazel, all of which shared their lives with us while teaching us about life & traditions in the Phillapeans. We were delighted to share many 2am potlucks. I was offered to try Rex's "balut" & we were all surprised by the shrimp remaining completely intact 😆 (we usually never see their eyes, so it made them seem inedible 🤣) I will definitely always remember the laughs Rex got out of our reactions to this dish 😉 I have seen & shared many different emotions with Rex as there is definitely a special bond built among caregivers working throughout the night. I am so very sorry to learn of this tremendous loss of such a phenomenal guy who had such pride when he talked about Wheng. Rex was undoubtedly an Angelic Nurse. May his beautiful soul always remain in our heavy hearts, as his wings were ready but our hearts were not. ❤️‍🩹💞💟💕💖 With sincere gratitude for the weekend to know & work 8 years along of Rex, Megan Schultz

To Rex’ Family: From St john the Baptist class and batch 1990, we extend our deepest sympathy. May his soul be at peace with our Heavenly Father. ‘’People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime.’’ I have known Rex since High School days, we were classmates from 1st-4th year at the Notre Dame of Kabacan. We graduated Valedictorians in the elementary. Him from Kabacan Pilot Elementary School and me, “the barrio girl” from Katidtuan Central School. During our 1st year, he obtained the highest scores and got the full scholarship. I was always second to him. At one time, I beat him with few points I think we were in 2nd or 3rd year and so I was granted the full scholarship. And he was like mad at me. Mind you, d nya ako pinapansin the whole year. Pero bumawi naman sya after that. He became our Valedictorian. We were like cats and dogs during HS years because we both were competitive. Only during summer that we are friends but when the school started, we’re back to being Tom and Jerry again. Rex was a leader in our batch. He was always voted as Class President and group leader. During the 4th year, he became the Battalion Commander of the ROTC, and was the editor in chief of our school organ, NDK Herald. He was a simple, quiet, and reserved type of guy. “Mahiyain pero my pagka kalog din”. He was a sports enthusiast who loved to play basketball and volleyball and was good at both. He dreamt of becoming a medical doctor. We both wanted to be doctors, but we ended up being nurses - successful nurses in our own fields. Our friendship grew during college years, although he studied in NDU (Cotabato) and me in SPC(Davao). We shared fun times, eating balut, mani, and BBQ, strolling with our circle of friends during sem breaks in USM avenue (Kabacan) until we graduated and became professionals. In our group, Mariet and I settled down first, followed by Girlie and Rex was the only one left single. In 2002 or 2003, Rex invited me and Girlie to come to their house because he said he’s gonna miss us. “magkita naman tayo bago ako umalis baka matagalan uli bago tayo magkita kita.” You surprised us because we didn’t know you were leaving for US then.. natakot pa ako sa alaga mong sawa noon. You wanted me to hold it. That was long ago almost 19 years, Manong,.. yes! we didn’t see you in person that long. But our friendship remained, we kept in touch through the years. Out of the blue you would chat us, kamustahan and kulitan. For the few of us, we fondly called him, Manong. Because he was like an older brother, protective of his friends, always prepared to extend a helping hand or listen to another’s problems, without expecting anything in return. Pero madaya ka Manong Rex. Binigla mo kami. You always said to me, “ang tagal na nating d nagkita, Jen”, “Kelan ka pupunta dito sa US?”.. Pero kahit pa pupunta ako ng US soon, hindi mo na ako maipasyal, as you promised. Masakit man isipin, we know you’re in a better place now. We may question God, why? Why so soon He took you away from us, from your family? We may not understand the reason/s now, but we know that for everything, there’s a purpose.… Physically you left us, but your memories will be etched in our minds. Rex’ death was sudden, but his life was not faint. His memory will always be with us, and his legacy will continue through his children. Goodbye, Manong Rex, our dear classmate and friend. We’ll all miss you a lot. Thank you for the friendship and the memories, from all of us, your classmates in 4-A St John the Baptist. Rex Mapanao Dulay, 48, class Valedictorian of Batch 1990. Signing off…. (Jennifer Galeon-Ocampo)
