John Morton Phillips

MOUNT HOREB - John Morton Phillips, age 70, passed away on Monday, April 3, 2023, at St. Mary’s Hospital. He was born on Dec. 15, 1952, in Madison, the son of Wendell and Elizabeth (Hanley) Phillips.

John graduated from Madison East High School, with the class of 1971. He worked as a rural mail carrier out of the Verona, Wis., Post Office for almost four decades. He was a past president of the Dane County Rural Letter Carriers Association and a longtime member of the National Rural Letter Carriers Association. For many years he was a delegate to NRLCA National conventions. John was honored to be a recipient of the USPS Lakeland District Diversity Award.

John married JoAnn Hartwig on Aug. 7, 1987, at Little Bluff Campground in Rio, Wis. They enjoyed going for convertible rides that easily turned into memorable day trips. John was known as a kind and compassionate man, which was particularly evident as he cared for JoAnn these past years. John was a fisherman, a great cook, a dog lover and proud to be a progressive Democrat.

John is survived by his wife, JoAnn; his sister, Susan (Richard) Payne; sister-in-law, Vickie Hermanson; brother-in-law, Keith Hartwig; step-son, Matthew Palmer; and step-grandson, Corbin Palmer; and five much-loved nephews, Michael, David, Timothy, Josh and Jayson. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Lynn Phillips; and brother-in-law, Calvin Hartwig.

A graveside service will be held at OAK HILL CEMETERY, located at the intersection of Highway G and Highway J in the Town of Springdale, at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18, 2023.
