Obituary
Barb's 73 year walk among the flowers, birds and ocean waves ended on October 17, 2021, from the ravages of Cancer and kidney failure. She loved the town of Dunn, her beautiful Lake Waubesa and all its natural surroundings. Barb was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on February 9, 1948, and moved to East Troy, Wisconsin, as young girl where she lived with her parents, Bill and Betty Zimmer and her older brother, Bob. She graduated from East Troy high school in 1966 after spending many hours helping in the family pharmacy, Zimmer's Drug store. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1970 and started her teaching career in the Madison School district. She retired in 2004 after a fulfilling 34-year career. She was a beloved teacher who taught hundreds of second and third grade students at Schenk and Elvehjem elementary schools and remained friends with many of them to this day. She started each day in her classroom singing and playing "oh what a Beautiful morning" on a battered music box and inspired a number of her students to become teachers themselves.
Barb met her husband, Mark, on a blind date on the UW campus in the fall of 1968 and they married on July 17, 1971. Their 50-year marriage was blessed by the birth of their son, Benjamin, and was further blessed by marriage to his wife, Julie. That union gave her two granddaughters, Haley and Sawyer, who brought immeasurable joy, laughter and adventures both In Wisconsin and in the hills, beaches and coves of Southern California. Outdoor adventures, hiking along the shore and prairies of Lake Waubesa, as well as boating and biking kept Barb active. She enjoyed yoga and her many lifelong friendships. She was always there for her friends through love and laughter or a quiet shoulder to lean upon. Her incredible friends returned that love during the times of joy and shared the immense power of support in the hard times. She loved music and sang in several choirs, ultimately singing for the pope in The Vatican in Rome.
She is preceded in death by her parents; and much-loved grandmother, Neva. Barb is survived by her husband, Mark; son, Benjamin; brother, Bob; her beloved granddaughters; as well as nieces, nephews and cousins across the country.
There is a hole in the universe without Barb' s physical presence, but her legacy will live on through Ben and her granddaughters, and through the students she taught how to love and how to learn. A celebration of her beautiful life will be announced at a later time. In Lieu of flowers please make memorials to Clean Lakes Alliance or Groundswell Conservancy. The night before I got married, 26 July 1967, Barb came to the Korf’s to visit with Sally(my wife)who babysat Barb early on. I told Barb this not too long ago, but she didn’t remember, obviously. How I remembered this, I’ll never know either. I didn’t know Barb that well but I did know her parents quite well. Bill and Betty Zimmer were wonderful people and such a joy to be around, I’ll never forget them. I am sure she is with them now.

Dear Mark and family, Jon and I are so very sad to hear the news. I taught with Barb for many years at Schenk Elementary and we sang together in Choirs for the last 30 years. Barb was a delight in work and in play. Our hearts go out you and your young family. Your sweet granddaughters brought precious joy to Barb. May God bless you and your family! With deep sympathy, Jon and Ingrid Hanson
