Irvin N. Kinney

MADISON - Irvin N. Kinney, age 99, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2021, at Sebring Assisted Living Facility after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on June 8, 1922, in Wabash, Ind., the 5th son of Brice and Ethel Gay (Lowery) Kinney. As a young boy, Irvin enjoyed ice skating and tennis. He was adept at hunting and fishing and would supplement many of the evening meals with proteins. Irvin was a World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Army as a Technical Sergeant. Irvin was stationed in the Pacific Theater at both New Guinea and the island of Luzon in the Philippines. After the war, Irvin participated in the GI Bill where he earned his master’s degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Art and Education. After graduation, he started his business “Irv Kinney Studio, Home of the Originals” as a Goldsmith specializing in custom wedding and engagement rings, pendants and earrings. This is when he met and later married Sutz Fey Moy. In his free time, Irvin enjoyed maintaining his country property, photography, small engine repair, fishing and hunting. In his eighty’s, Irvin learned the computer so he could edit photographs of his jewelry. Irvin is survived by his wife, Sutz fey Kinney; daughter and partner, Mai Fei Kinney and Robyn Waniger; and sister, Joan LaPlante, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Olin Kinney, Eugene Kinney, Herman Kinney, and Alfred Kinney; and sisters, Louise White and Evelyn Gilliam. A celebration honoring Irvin’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Urban League of Greater Madison.
