Evelyn J. Valeria

COTTAGE GROVE - Evelyn J. Valeria, age 97, of Cottage Grove, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2024, in her daughter’s home. She was born on Nov. 13, 1926, in Dodgeville, the daughter of Frank and Myrtle (Christianson) Cutler.

Evelyn grew up on her family farm in rural Dodgeville, where Governor Dodge State Park is now located.  She graduated from Dodgeville High School in 1944. Evelyn married John Valeria and together they owned a landscaping business which was dissolved when John passed away in 1978.

Evelyn was an avid reader whose interests for books spanned fiction, biographies, and political works. Her creative spirit found expression through the quilts she crafted and the delicate doilies she crocheted. Not just an artist with a needle and thread, Evelyn was renowned for her handiwork around the home. From wallpapering walls to sewing drapes, she approached every task with a level of skill and dedication that was truly remarkable. Her garden was her sanctuary, her flower beds a blaze of color nurtured by her loving hands.

Evelyn's affinity for animals was evident in her enthusiastic bird watching and in the heartwarming bond she shared with her cherished cat, Midnite, who was her devoted companion for 21 years.

At the core of Evelyn's world was her family and she loved them unconditionally. Her kitchen served as a gathering place, a site of treasured traditions, especially where her cookies were concerned. As a cook and baker, she poured her soul into every dish she prepared, leaving an indelible mark on the palates and hearts of those she fed.

Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Shari Lord; grandchildren, Justin Lord, Todd (Brenda) Valeria, Scott (Paula) Valeria and Amy (Jason ) Adler; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Myrtle; husband, John; son, Jim Valeria; son-in-law, Don Lord; brothers, Milo (Annabelle) Cutler, LaVerne (Alice) Cutler; and sister, Florence (Bob) Stanley.

In keeping with Evelyn's wishes, no formal services will be held. She will be buried next to her husband, John, at Roselawn Memorial Park.

Memorials may be gifted in Evelyn’s name to Agrace HospiceCare or the Dane County Humane Society.

The family would like to thank each caregiver at Agrace Hospice involved in Evelyn’s care for their kindness and compassion.
