Betty Jean Joachim

MADISON - Betty Joachim passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 20, 2021. She was born to Esther and Ole Heltne on March 17, 1925, in Madison, Wisconsin. She lived almost all of her life in Madison, spending the last few years in Cottage Grove at the Drumlin Reserve Assisted Living. She was very involved in the community and was made honorary ambassador to help make new residents comfortable. Betty married Donald Hossman (deceased) and they raised four children on the East side of Madison. She worked at many jobs, but most enjoyed working in the lunch program of Schenk Elementary School. She was a loving mother and dedicated caregiver throughout her first husband’s illness. Betty enjoyed her grown children and was excited as grandchildren started appearing in 1977. She may have caught the traveling bug when visiting her newborn grandson in Hawaii. In 1985, Betty married Bill Joachim (deceased). Betty and Bill loved to travel throughout the United States, often on bus tours where they made many good friends. They enjoyed dancing, especially to country music. Betty’s focus in life was her family. She loved family gatherings and keeping in touch with her expanding brood. Betty is survived by her four children: Marcia (John) Gunnarson, Curtis (Bette) Hossman, Dennis (Marilyn) Hossman, and Randi (Dennis) Walsh; and her 12 grandchildren: Kelsey (Adam), Mike, Natali, Jennifer (Mike), Jason (Tara), Siri, Laurel (Justin), Eric (Shatzi), Dawn, Dean (Shannon), Debbie (Mike), and Kari (Matt). Betty was also blessed with 28 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and husbands, Donald Hossman and Bill Joachim. A funeral service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 11 a.m., on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2021. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Trinity Lutheran Church.
