Obituary

MADISON - Barbara Jean Carey, age 78, of Madison, passed away on Friday, Feb. 18, 2022. She was born on July 18, 1943, in Madison, the daughter of Raymond and Jeannette (Grosse) Carey.


Barbara graduated from Edgewood High School and served in the U.S. Army.


Barbara worked as a program assistant for Wisconsin Department of Health and Social Services, retiring in 2002.


Barbara is survived by her daughter, Sharon A. (Russ) Walsvik; two grandchildren, Eric (Kayla) Walsvik and Curtis Walsvik; great-grandson, Easton Walsvik; brother, Tom Carey; niece, Linda Carey; and nephew, Matthew (Lisa) Carey. She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Jeannette; two nephews, Michael Carey and Mark Carey; and niece, Lori Dudman.


A memorial service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, March 7, 2022. Burial will be held at Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. on Monday, March 7, 2022. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

I worked with Barb for 7 years at the DHSS. We had a lot of good times during those years and she helped me through some rough times personally. I hope they play one of Elvis's songs at her memorial - she would have loved that. RIP Barb old friend - XOXO. Terry Kinney

Barb was a one of a kind person. She was a hard worker but also found time to "yuck it up!" I know because I worked with Barb for 10 years. She was a loyal friend and her family was very important to her, in particular, her daughter Sharon who she raised as a single mom. Her distinctive laugh and kindness will be greatly missed.
