Mary E. Smith

Madison - Mary Elizabeth Smith, age 80, of Madison, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2021. She was born on May 22, 1941, in New Martinsville, WV, the daughter of Robert Smith and Virginia (Rist) Smith. Mary graduated from Hopewell High School in Aliquippa, PA, and Barnard College; she attended graduate school at Columbia University. Prior to retirement, she enjoyed a career teaching English in middle school for the Monona Grove School District. In her free time, she enjoyed her friends in Madison and in Boulder, CO, extended family, tai chi, international travel, reading and cheering on the Wisconsin sports teams. Mary is survived by her mother, Virginia Elizabeth Smith; sister, Amy (Jeffrey) Gore; and her beloved niece and nephews, Susan (Carroll) Stevens, Thomas (Tracey) Gore and Jonathan (Kelly) Gore and their families. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Moore Smith. Private graveside services will be held at a later date.
