Obituary

MOUNT HOREB - Beulah Eleanor Uren, age 98, of Mount Horeb, peacefully released her fierce grip on life on Friday, July 2, 2021, at Pine Villa in Prairie du Sac. Beulah was born on Sept. 3, 1922, on the rural Barneveld farm of her parents, Norwegian immigrants Halvor and Minnie (Nelson) Rue. On July 6, 1947, she married Lawrence “Shorty” Uren, and the two embarked on a 54-year journey of unwavering dedication to each other, to their family, and to the land they farmed together. Beulah was the fifth and longest lived of seven siblings, to whom she was devoted throughout her long life. She loved nothing better than to share her memories of picking blackberries, hauling wood for the cook stove, and playing on the giant rock Pinnacle that overlooked her home. Beulah attended the one-room Meadow Vale School and Arena High School, then earned a teacher’s certificate from UW-Platteville. Following college, she taught at Erbe and other one-room schools before retiring from teaching to start a family and farm full-time with Shorty. A strong and resourceful farm wife, Beulah milked cows alongside Shorty, kept the books, grew a huge garden, and tended many beautiful flower beds. A skilled cook and baker, she was renowned for her homemade meatballs, lefse and light-as-air raised doughnuts. Beulah and Shorty farmed with his parents for a number of years before purchasing their own farm just outside Mount Horeb in 1963. The property was in notable disrepair, but - due in no small part to Beulah’s grit, determination and frugality - the couple transformed the property into a thriving dairy farm and comfortable home for her family. Beulah worked non-stop until she and Shorty sold their cows in 1984, when the pair - inseparable as always - embarked on a retirement filled with travel, bowling, serving the church, and enjoying good times with children and grandchildren. Along with being an accomplished farmer and teacher, Beulah was also a talented memoir writer and poet. Her works ranged from poignant reminiscences of her childhood to poems filled with vivid imagery and wry humor. She wrote of what she knew - about fishing, canning, cow talk, and even making mud pies as a child. Several of her pieces were published in the anthology, “Echoes from Mount & Plain.” In this book, Beulah describes herself with the same simple eloquence she brought to all her writing: “I am country. Born and raised on a farm. Taught country kids in country school. Married a farmer, learned cow talk and lived with the land - a simple life, with roots.” Beulah is survived by daughter, Greer (Dennie) Deneen; daughter-in-law, Jeannie U’Ren; granddaughters, Amy (Jason Mentzel) U'Ren, Holly (Kevin) Hage, Carson (Ryan Blair) Sutter and Brooke Sutter; and several much-loved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lawrence Uren; son, Greg U'Ren; grandchild, Gregg U'Ren; brothers, Henry Rue, Harland (JoAnn) Rue and Marvin (Betty) Rue; and sisters, Alice (Kermit) Carden, Mabel (Wallace) Knudson and Helen (Alton) Knudson. A funeral service will be held at Mount Horeb Evangelical Lutheran CHURCH, 315 E. Main St., Mount Horeb, at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 9, 2021, with the Rev. John Twiton presiding. Family and friends who wish to view the service via LIVE STREAM may visit Beulah's obituary page at www.gundersonfh.com and click on the Live Webcast link at 11 a.m. Burial will be held at Union Cemetery - Mount Horeb. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday. Beulah’s family offers our deepest gratitude to the dedicated staff of Agrace HospiceCare and The Pines Villa; Beulah’s wonderful homecare givers, especially Carrie Reese, Dawn Graber, Flo Kelly and Joan Thony; and friend, neighbor and faithful snowplower Travis Gudgeon. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Beulah’s name to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Driftless Area Land Conservancy. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com. Beulah was a very good friend of my mother’s (Pearl Vierima). One of my mom’s favorite memories was when Beulah talked her into going on the Ferris wheel at the Frolic. They giggled the whole time! Teri Vierima

On my visits to Mount Horeb I used to take my mother, Pearl Vierima, for a ride out to Beulahs house. It was always a trip mom looked forward to because they were such close friends and their conversations were more like sister talking to sister. On leaving, we would comment on how happy Beulah seemed in her house up the hill … surrounded by nature. Because they were the same age and background, they enjoyed many of the same simple pleasures. Their adventure on the carni rides one year is a story they enjoyed retelling. Beulah’s lefse was second to none (I didn’t dare tell my mom that). There were many special souls in that generation, and Beulah was one. R.I.P. Scott Vierima / Lake Mary, FL

Beulah was one of the pie makers who volunteered at Bethel Horizons while I was running a camp there; she was a delightful woman and the kids really enjoyed her. It was she who showed them how to take the apple peel strip from the antique peeler, swing it around one’s head once, and then let it fly to the ground; whatever letter was shaped would indicate your girl/boyfriend. ☺️ She was a gift to my groups and we all loved her! His bless her and all she did and shared! My sincere condolences to her family. Hang onto memories as they will carry you through your grief. Ann Dettwiler
