Mabel Kuharski

MONONA - Mabel Elizabeth Kuharski, age 96, of Monona, passed gently on Friday, May 7, 2021, in her home of 70 years. Ever cheerful, firm in her faith, the quiet anchor of her family, Mabel aimed always to do the right thing. She was born on Dec. 13, 1924, in Keenesburg, Colo., the daughter of Edward and Clara (Fox) Schey, both of pioneer Dane County families. Mabel grew up in Sun Prairie, attended Sacred Hearts School, graduated high school in 1942, earned a home economics degree from the University of Wisconsin, then taught that subject for some years. She married Chester Kuharski on Sept. 23, 1950, and with him built a home and a cottage. With patient love, Mabel raised four sons, mostly near and always close. She was a dedicated homemaker, an expert seamstress and cook. Mabel enjoyed all the times at the Pearl Lake cottage, her lively bridge and poker evenings, and occasional travel. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary parish for 70 years. Mabel is survived by sons, Wayne Kuharski, Michael Kuharski (Hanna Cook-Wallace), Edward Kuharski (Liz Green) and Allen Kuharski (Richard Lowe); grandson, Thomas Kuharski; sister, Irene Schey; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; brother, Emden Schey; sisters, Marion Hunsader and Gladys Martinelli; and step-grandson, Travis Green. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 13, 2021. A second visitation will be held at IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5101 Schofield St., Monona, from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 14, 2021, with Father Chad Droessler presiding.
