Obituary
PORTLAND, Ore. - John F. Shumate, 56, of Portland, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, May 1, 2021, at U W Hospital and Clinics to a severe heart attack.
He was born on Nov. 10, 1964, in Madison, Wis., the son of Richard Shumate and Anna
(Strop) Zimmerman. He was a 1983 graduate of Poynette High School and proudly served our

John was a proud father, and grandfather, and was well loved by kids and animals alike. He
spent the last 6 years of his life with his true love, Annmarie Bruning. At 6’11”, John was a giant
around other people with a heart just as big. He cared about those he loved and wanted to
share his experiences with others so that they might benefit from his life. There was always a
story for every occasion and a bit of wisdom to impart.
John owned and operated Portland Security and Protection providing security for numerous
businesses in Portland, Oregon. Now Heaven has the best bodyguard they could ask for.
John is survived by his best friend and significant other, Annmarie Bruning; two sons, Zackary
