David Michael Dupor

MADISON - David Michael Dupor, age 59, passed away on Tuesday, April 27, 2021, much to the relief of every trout in the state of Wisconsin. He was born on Feb. 12, 1962, to Duane and Joyce (Svatos) Dupor. David grew up in northern Wisconsin, where he raised chickens and developed a love of fishing, swimming, canoeing and exploring the outdoors with his dad and brother, Jim. David attended LaFollette High School in Madison, where he competed in track and cross country and worked at Gunderson Funeral Home. He graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1988 with a degree in printing. He went on to work as a printer at Royle Printing and later at Quad Graphics. In 1989, David met Paulette Scherer, the love of his life, during a summer softball league. He proposed to her under the stars on an overnight canoe trip on the Wisconsin River, and they married on Aug. 21, 1992. They raised three children together, of whom he was extremely proud and loved to brag about. In 1999, they moved the family back to Madison, where he joined his father-in-law, Bill, as a locksmith with Bill’s Key Shop, working there for more than 15 years. David’s hobbies included the music of Buddy Holly and the Crickets, professional wrestling, fishing, playing cards, Scrabble with his mom, watching his beloved Badgers and Packers, and the never-ending pursuit of the perfect French dip. The highlight of every year was the annual March Madness party, which he organized with his brother and best friend, Jim. David also loved to travel, taking his family to many state and national parks. He particularly loved Door County and the waterfalls of northern Wisconsin. David was incredibly close to both sides of his extended family and enjoyed frequent trips in which his parents and his siblings, Jim, Susan and Bill brought their families on vacation together. He insisted on starting these trips “the right way” with a Mountain Dew. David lived by the simple motto of “Don’t sweat the small stuff,” the small stuff being everything but family, fishing and the Wisconsin Badgers. He will be remembered for his trademark coonskin cap, his signature Ric Flair “Woo!” and Hulk Hogan pose, and for always entering the water with the biggest possible splash. His greatest joys in life were being with his family and making others laugh. David is survived by his wife, Paulette; his parents, Duane and Joyce; his children, Michael, Adam (Alexis) and Emma; his granddaughters, Sophie and Olivia; his siblings, James (Debra), Susan (Graham Burbank) and Bill (Kathy Crowley); many nieces and nephews and many other family members and close friends. Due to COVID-19 gathering restrictions, a private family service will be held with a private burial at the Town of Dunn Burying Ground. A public visitation will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 2, 2021. Due to COVID-19 guidelines, only 50 people are allowed into the funeral home at one time. Social distancing and face masks are required. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Sam Lubner and the staff at the UW-Carbone Cancer Center, the Digestive Health Center (especially nurse, Dean M.) and his interpreters, particularly Kim B., Amy S. and Peggy W.
