Obituary
VERONA - Ernie, age 69, passed away unexpectedly on March 16, 2021, at U.W. Hospital with his wife by his side. Ernie was born April 10, 1951, the son of Rose Barbara (Handel) and Henry August Scheele. He was confirmed at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Cross Plains, and, in 1969 graduated from Mt. Horeb High School. Ernie graduated from Madison Area Technical College where he studied Auto Repair. Ernie turned these skills into a 30-year, word of mouth business.
Ernie had a life-long love for astronomy. As a small child, Ernie went missing on his grandparents’ farm. That evening, he was found on the hilltop staring at the stars and that’s where the hobby started. Ernie built a shop on his property and added a Cleary building for additional storage. He looked forward every spring to being able to keep his shop doors open to let the warm air, and sunshine in. Ernie married Ann Larson on September 29, 2001. He and Ann enjoyed traveling and spending free time working improving his yard on which he and his wife planted over 200 trees and bushes. In 2005, they installed an 83 ft. long pond-less waterfall stream alongside of the house, which they really enjoyed.
He is survived by his wife, Ann; sister, Marjorie (James) Krause; brother, John (Beth) Scheele; nephew, Aaron; nieces, Melanie (Gregg) Wolf, Nicole Scheele and Megan (Elliot) Buol; In-laws, Ione and Don Paulson; sister-in-law, Kristy Larson; and nephews, Lars and Trygve. Ernie was very proud of his great nieces, Courtney, Mackenzie and new baby, Elise; and great nephew, Caleb. He was preceded in death by his mother, Rose Barbara (Handel); father, Henry August Scheele; and father-in law, Olaf Larson.
A funeral service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 21, 2021, with Pastor Blake Rohrer presiding. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 11:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Sunday. Due to COVID-19 guidelines only 50 people are allowed in the funeral home at one time and refreshments are unable to be served. Social distancing and face masks will be required.
Memorials may be made in memory of Ernie's father, Henry, to a cancer charity of your choice or a kidney foundation of your choice in memory of Ernie's mother, Rose Barbara. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

Ernie was our neighbor for many, many years. He was a hard-working man who was always busy in his shop or in his yard. I would often meet him on the road as he was driving a car he was working on to check it out. He was a quiet and humble man. He was a fixture in our neighborhood and he will most definitely be missed.

Ernie was my brother-in-law, my friend. He was kind, generous, with a lovely laugh and warm smile. He was talented, hard-working, solid in his support of his family, his friends, his clients. Ernie was a dear loving husband to my sister Ann, a wonderful son-in-law to my folks and a cherished uncle to my sons. We are at a loss, we already miss him so much... He's in our hearts forever.
