Randy Laufenberg

Obituary
MOUNT HOREB - A kind, gentle spirit who loved the land was taken from us on Thursday, March 18, 2021, when Randall Joseph Laufenberg was taken from us due to an unexpected health condition, at UW Hospital. Randy was born to Kenneth and Rose Laufenberg on Dec. 11, 1962, in Madison, Wis. He farmed with his father and brothers in the area, and married Pamela S. Radtke on Sept. 17, 1988. For many years he worked with Wisconsin Landscaping as a landscape designer and installer.
Randy was first and foremost a man of the land. Early on he entered the family dairy farming vocation, treating his bovine charges like family. He continued involvement in the Laufenberg family’s commitment to the land, helping wherever help was needed by parents and siblings. When the pandemic arrived, Randy took great joy in hiking with his family members, not a single trail sign escaped his careful attention.
When not out and about, Randy was an avid viewer of Public Television and WPR when in the truck, always eager to enlarge his knowledge of the world around us.
He was a student of history and biography, reading whatever came his way on those subjects and spending hours at museums and galleries. Visit the Milwaukee Public Museum with Randy and you could expect to spend hours examining each exhibit in great detail.
And then there were the animals. The Laufenberg farm was home over the years to a veritable menagerie, cows of course, horses and ponies, a pet turkey, a pot-bellied pig, the obligatory succession of farm dogs, and Randy’s special friends, his cats.
Stop by to see if Randy had a widget or a thingamajig in his vast collection of objects and you would be invited to sit and have a cup of coffee with him and discuss the current state of politics and social developments. Expect to spend an hour or two in substantive conversation.
Sharing in the grief of loss are Randy’s loving wife, Pam; his children, Nicole (Dan), Brandon (Mackenzie) and Alexander; eight siblings, brothers, Steve, Jim, Mike, Greg, and sisters, Connie, Donna, Deb and Chris; and a host of family, friends, neighbors and colleagues. It was said of Randy, “He was a legend around here. A legend in his own time.”
A visitation will be held at GUNDERSON CAMACHO MOUNT HOREB FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 500 N. Eighth St., Mount Horeb, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24, 2021. A memorial service will be held privately for family on Thursday, March 25, 2021. Burial will be at ST. IGNATIUS CALVARY CEMETERY in Mount Horeb at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 25, 2021. All are invited to attend. Flowers may be sent to Gunderson Camacho Mount Horeb or, in lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Wisconsin Public Radio. Very sorry of Randy's passing. He truly was a kind and gentle soul. He helped many people out with projects. I think he liked to sit back in a group of people, with a grin on his face and enjoyed listening to Pam interact with friends and family. He was a very nice gentle man.

We first met Randy when he was working on a project at our home with Wisconsin Landscapes and Remodeling. He was building rock walls for us for a couple of weeks, and we got to know him a little bit. Enough to know what a good person he was. He was interesting to talk with. He loved hot chocolate chip cookies we made for him and his son every day and never got tired of having more. He told us about his life on the farm with his folks and had some stories to tell that he wanted us to know about. They were difficult for him to tell and one day he even started to cry when he was describing how hard his folks worked on the farm. We learned a new word from him, called “budge.” When we asked him if he could move a rock over a little bit, he had a trick using another rock wedged in underneath it that he would push with the bucket on his skid-steer and then he would say, “OK, we’ll just budge this rock.” We will remember him every day when we see his handiwork in the beautiful rock walls he built. One day we asked him if he would like to get a little artistic with a wall he was working on and he decided to make it using unusually shaped rocks standing on their sides instead stacked top to bottom using a hand chisel to shape them together. It was very unique, and we loved it. He was so proud of it and we were so happy that he took a very large flat rock that was left over from the project and turned it into a rock table with his son that is pictured with them below. We will call it Randy’s Table from now on. We did not know him long enough to get to know him well, but even briefly was long enough to know he was a good guy. – Doug and Margie King, Town of Perry, Dane Co. WI.

A memory that Randy gave to me that will last a lifetime. I was never so scared as a girl from the suburbs taking her first ride inside a tractor that I thought for sure was going to topple over. Randy’s calm demeanor, reassurance and a few chuckles along the way helped to calm my nerves. I knew then what a kind and caring soul my cousin Pam had married and the beautiful life he had given her. That day I experienced calm, tranquility, excitement, laughter and love. Not only was it obvious the love that Randy and Pam shared together but the love they also shared creating a beautiful home and farm. Thank you Randy for sharing a piece of it and giving me this memory ♥️
