Michael J Hickey

MADISON - Michael J. Hickey, age 65, passed away at his home on Wednesday, March 10, 2021, after a courageous battle with inoperable cancer. At the time of his passing, Mike was surrounded by his daughter, Jamie, grandchildren, Ashton and Quinn, son-in-law, Seth, and beloved sister, Cindy. Mike was a fighter and never gave up hope. Mike was born on Nov. 28, 1955, in Madison, the son of James and Caroline (Brock) Hickey. Mike graduated from LaFollette High School with the class of 1973. He was an extremely talented construction worker for over thirty years and was a loyal and dedicated employee of local builders, Homburg, Findorff, and Boldt; he was a proud union member. Mike was a man of integrity, with a great sense of humor, very independent and humble, and had the ability to fix anything. Mike was an avid Packers fan (and stock owner), enjoyed playing golf, traveling, being outdoors, and enjoying an occasional adult beverage with friends and family. He took great pride in being Jamie’s dad and truly cherished his time with his grandkids, especially playing mini golf with his grandson, Ashton. Mike is survived by his daughter, Jamie (Seth Herro) Hickey; two beautiful grandchildren, Ashton and Quinn Herro and his cat, Maggie; sisters, Cindy (Jon) Plummer and Kathy Forsythe; brother, Pat Hickey; three nephews, Theran (Jade) Plummer, Jason Forsythe and Chad Forsythe; and four nieces, Kaila (Ian Thornburg) Plummer, Lindsay (Denver Raemisch) Plummer, Becky (Korie) Huskey and Denise (Chad) McDermott. He was preceded in death by his parents, Caroline and James; and beloved dog, Spike. Mike’s family would like to thank everyone for the calls and visits supporting Mike. He felt the love and knew his friendships were genuine. Thank you to everyone that joined him at his daughter’s wedding in Wisconsin Dells. Mike was so happy to be there for Jamie, and the opportunity to hang with the gang like the good old days was priceless. And to everyone who planned and participated in the parade on Mike’s birthday, he described it as completely overwhelming. A special and heart-felt thank you to his sister, Cindy for all her love and support, and his special “family member” Melissa, whose friendship was a once in a lifetime experience. Thank you to his buddies, Rick, Steve, Mark and Jim, he held all of you close and appreciated everything you did for him. Thank you to Dr. Sam Lubner and all the dedicated doctors and staff at the UW Carbone Cancer Center for the care you provided Mike during his battle. Finally, thank you to the entire Hospice Staff who truly cared about Mike’s comfort and appreciated his sarcasm. A memorial gathering will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, March 26, 2021. Due to COVID-19 guidelines only 50 people are allowed in the funeral home at one time. Social distancing and face masks are required.
