Obituary
MADISON - Charles Arvid Romstad, age 88, of Madison, died on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2020, at Oakwood Village East. He was born on June 28, 1932, in Eau Claire, the son of Arvid and Lucille (Jacobson) Romstad.
Charles graduated from Evansville High School, St. Olaf College and Luther Seminary. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 until 1957. Charles married Martha Stone on Aug. 20, 1960, in Madison and together they raised two children, Tom and Lynne.
Chuck’s deep faith was exhibited in all areas of his life. He was passionate in his support for marginalized persons and communities. He volunteered for several Madison-area non-profits and took joy in getting to know service recipients. Chuck enjoyed language study, including Norwegian, German, Spanish and Hmong. He was a talented poet, singer and marathoner.
Chuck was preceded in death by his wife. He is survived by his children; sisters, Judith and Alice; brothers, Karl and David; sister-in-law, Helen Stone; three grandchildren; as well as cousins; and numerous nieces and nephews.

I enjoyed visiting with Chuck, and his stories of the many interesting things he had done and places he had been. I will remember his sense of humor and his quick grin. May your memories bring you peace.

I knew him as Chuck. In his time as a fellow member of St John's Lutheran church he inspired me by his dedication to treating everyone he met as equals. He was a champion of the disenfranchised and I will always remember him as a brother in Christ.

Chuck and Martha were a lovely couple. They were both accomplished musicians, Chuck had a beautiful solo baritone voice and Martha soloed on the viola. Chuck and I would meet often at Lazy Jane’s for breakfast and I was privileged to handle the purchase and sale of their homes over the years. May their lives be for a blessing.

Chuck was a dear friend to our parents, and whole family, growing up in Fort Atkinson, as was Martha. His easygoing nature, quick laugh, and gentle guidance was a constant - whether it was learned tips on canoe building, upholstery repair, or getting along with and respecting others. Upon reflection, he was a profound example for living a good life as a good person. I find comfort in my many fond memories of Chuck. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Romstad family, especially the families of Lynne and Tom, brother David, and Helen.
