MONONA - Judith Lila Mueller, age 80, of Monona passed away on Monday, Dec. 28, 2020. Judy was born Oct. 4, 1940, in Bayonne, N.J., to Lyle Elmer Meeker and Viola Marie (Rasmussen) Meeker. Due to Lyle's job as an office manager for a construction company, the family moved frequently and as a child Judy lived in multiple states as well as overseas in The Hague, Netherlands, and Milan and Trieste, Italy. During the 1950s, Judy made five transatlantic crossings on ocean liners such as the Independence, Vulcania and Mauretina. In July of 1955, Judy and her family sailed on the Italian ship Andrea Doria from Gibraltar to New York, just one year before the Andrea Doria collided with another ship and sank off the coast of Massachusetts. During her time living overseas, Judy learned to speak Italian and French and went on to earn a degree in French from Northern Illinois University as well as a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. After earning her undergraduate degree, Judy attended a summer program on French civilization at the University of Paris. After earning her master’s degree, Judy taught French in Elgin, Ill. and Winnequah Middle School in Monona, Wis. While working on her master’s degree in Madison, Judy met and married Gene Mueller on Sept. 21, 1968, and they moved to Monona, Wis., where they raised two daughters. Judy is survived by her husband, Gene, Monona; daughters, Kari, Redmond, Wash. and Lisa (David), Seattle, Wash; grandchildren, Ania and Vincent; and brother, Jerry Meeker, Austin, Texas. Judy was a loving mother, wife, and grandmother who will be deeply missed.
