Obituary

MONONA - Marjorie Raether of Monona passed away on her 99th birthday, Feb. 23, 2022, at Agrace HospiceCare.  She was born on Feb. 23, 1923, in Seymour, Wis., to parents, Henry and Meta (Rusch) Butter.  


Marjorie grew up on a dairy farm and attended a country schoolhouse with her three siblings. She graduated from Seymour High School in 1942, which is where she met her future husband, James Santkuyl.  James and Marjorie wed on Aug. 3, 1944, and had three children, Thomas, Sharon and Paul.  After Jim passed away, Marge married a former classmate, Ken Raether, on April 6, 1988. Marge worked for The Aid Association for Lutherans for 32 years.


Marjorie was a kind and loving person with a strong faith.  She loved cooking and baking for her family and friends and was an excellent seamstress.  Vacation time was spent in northern Wisconsin and traveling with her husbands, Jim or Ken, and daughter.


Marjorie is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Richard) Quale; son, Paul Santkuyl; sister, Audrey Druckrey, four grandchildren, Jon Van Roo, Bart (Laura) Van Roo, Ben (Annie) Van Roo and Eric Santkuyl; nine great-grandchildren, Shannon, Thomas, Reid, Sydney, Cole, Coen, Maren Van Roo and Trevor (Madi) and Taylor Santkuyl; and great-great granddaughter, Lucy Santkuyl.   Marjorie was preceded in death by former husband, James; second husband, Kenneth Raether; parents, Henry and Meta; brother, Robert Butter; sister, Dorothy Noack; and son, Thomas Santkuyl.


A funeral service will be conducted by Pastor Eric Bakken, at WEST KOSHKONONG LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1911 Koshkonong Road, Stoughton, at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 4, 2022. Family and friends who wish to view the service via LIVE STREAM may visit Marjorie’s obituary page at www.gundersonfh.com <http://www.gundersonfh.com> and click on the Live Webcast link at 11 a.m. on Friday.  Visitation will be at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday.  A committal service will be done by Pastor Knitt at APPLETON HIGHLAND MEMORIAL PARK, 3131 N. Richmond St., Appleton, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2022.
