MADISON- Clemens “Clem” Dohmeier, age 94, of Madison passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2020.
Clem was born July 19, 1926, in Princeton, Minnesota. The son of Henry and Helen (Schlauchtenhaufen) Dohmeier. Clem attended Alden High School and graduated from Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa. He later received a Master’s Degree in Guidance Counseling from the University of Montana.
In his 40-year educational career Clem taught history, he coached basketball, football, and baseball, and he was a guidance counselor at various middle and high school levels. His teaching career began at a one room schoolhouse in Boy River, Minnesota. Clem then continued his love for education at Morristown, Emmons, and Alden, Minnesota. After attaining his guidance counseling Master’s Degree, he began counseling in Lancaster, Wisconsin. He then continued with his positions at Madison East, and Madison LaFollette High Schools. Clem finished his career at Sennett Middle School in Madison.
Once Clem and family arrived in Madison, he became very active at Monona Lutheran Church. His faith was foundational in all aspects of his life, growing up in a family where his father, a brother, and some uncles were all pastors in the Lutheran Church. Clem held multiple non-clergy roles including church elder at Monona Lutheran Church.
He proudly served two years in the U.S. Army at Fort Sill in the 553rd Heavy Artillery Battalion, Lawton, Oklahoma.
He utilized his background in coaching to develop youth sports opportunities, through the creation of Madison East Side Hockey and the Lancer League Baseball organizations. In addition, Clem and a neighbor initiated the concept of creating a park that would be enjoyed by future generations. This concept eventually became the Edna Taylor Conservation Park, which in 1990 was registered as a National Landmark.
Clem excelled in the sports he played, in particular, football. Clem was named, and participated in the inaugural 1945 Minnesota State High School Football All Star Game as a running back for the South Team and continued at Wartburg College.
Clem was devoted to family and loved his wife, three sons, brothers and sisters, many grandchildren and extended family dearly. For fifty years he was a caregiver to his wife, Geraldine who was limited physically with severe Rheumatoid Arthritis. Clem was always developing gadgets around the house to assist with her limitations, some of which were successful. A little-known fact was he was a talented drawer. Family connection through reunions and daily phone calls were extremely important to him and to those on the receiving end.
Besides his stewardship to God, he had a passion for service to community through the Just Say No Program at Sennett Middle School, and Group Dynamics at Madison Area Technical College.
Exercise was also very important to Clem and he has passed that trait on to his family. He continued to live independently in his home until his death.
Clem is survived by his children, Tom Dohmeier (Mary), Steve Dohmeier (Denise) and Joel Dohmeier (Laura); brothers, Gerhardt and Richard Dohmeier; sisters, Evelyn Schock and Gertrude Whitmire; his grandchildren, Storm Dohmeier, Keeley Jansen (Chris), Taylor Dohmeier, Nicole Dohmeier, Alexa Dohmeier, Andrew Dohmeier, Logan Dohmeier, Ryan Dohmeier, and Tyler Dohmeier; step grandchildren, Brandon Maahs, Brooke Maahs and Drew Benish; and great-grandson, Stellan Jansen.
Clem was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Geraldine; his parents; sisters, Dorothy (Elmer) Wittmer and Paula (Alfred) Sprenger; brothers, Ernest (Helen) and Ervin (Loretta) Dohmeier, and in-laws, Jewell Schock and Hal Whitmire.
