Obituary

MIDDLETON - Duane D. Neitzel, age 85, of Middleton, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 28, 2020, at Agrace HospiceCare, with his loving family by his side. His generous heart gave all he had to give - and then some. Duane was born on April 27, 1935, in Watertown, Wis., the son of George and Mildred (Scheele). He served in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Korean War. He married Elaine (Mullin) on June 10, 1961, in Fox Lake, Wis. He was also secretary/treasurer of Fire Fighters Local 311 for many years and a member of American Legion Post No. 151. Duane played baseball for The Laurel Tavern and The Village Bar. He later golfed every Thursday, travelling to a different course each week with his buddies. He was also a big Badgers, Packers and Brewers fan. He went on the Badger Honor Flight in October 2017 with his daughter, Caryn. Mount Olive Lutheran Church was an important part of his life, where he served over the years as an elder, usher and counted offerings many Monday mornings. He adored his grandchildren and attended many of their concerts, games and school events. Duane led numerous family vacations that will be long remembered, and where traditions will continue. Duane is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Elaine; two daughters, Erin and Michael Laemmrich and their children, Hannah and Dane, and Caryn and Joseph Haas and their son, Noah and two stepchildren, Nichole (Mark) Meagher, Connor, Savannah, McKenzie and Matt Haas; sisters, Judy Fassbender, Maxine (Jim) Ferron and Sue Roedl (Bill); brothers-in-law, Dick Schmid and Bill (Barbara) Mullin; and many nieces, nephews and other cherished family and friends. A fire officer who looked out for his crew while demanding respect, a skilled and knowledgeable Incident Commander, a strong and honest union leader, and the greatest accolade of all, a fire fighter who always went in and who’d never leave your side. A fine man, husband, and father. Condolences to Elaine and family. May Duane Rest In Peace. Phillip Vorlander

I had the pleasure of knowing Duane through my dad, "Ski" on the fire department. Whenever we crossed paths we would always talk for a long time. He will be missed.

My favorite memory of Uncle Duane was when I was about 5 or 6 and we had Christmas and Grandma and Grandpa Neitzel's in Fox Lake and before the gathering names were exchanged for gifts, well, if I remember correctly, mine was drawn by someone's boyfriend or girlfriend and they never showed so I didn't get a gift but sweet, caring Duane pulled out a roll of quarters to give me as my gift. I will never forget his generosity. The other fond memory I have is again from a Christmas party, and Duane was bouncing me on his knee and somehow I tumbled off and ended up in the ER with a couple stitches on my eyebrow, the scar is a forever memory of the Christmas party Uncle Duane was bouncing me on his knee. RIP Uncle Duane.
