I am so saddened to hear of Jim’s passing. I continually saw, both as his student and later as his colleague, that Jim wanted the best for everyone. In his quiet way, he was always supporting and encouraging. I most enjoyed the times away from the college when he was relaxed and so happy to be home with Siv. We especially enjoyed staying with you and Jim, Siv, when I brought the Mac choir to Monona UMC. Was so good to see you and enjoy your hospitality. My prayers go with you as you look for comfort in every day. Terri Wooldridge Benz

I only took one class with Dr. Goulding, my senior year at Mac. He introduced me to the real Islam, not what we saw on tv or the hated being spewed post 9/11. He really changed my mind about the religion and culture. He explained, spoke, and lectured, but mostly he listened. He listened to me and my classmates grapple with what was happening in our world, how it effected us, in the year of 9/11. It was a class that I will always love, look back on, and cherish. I’ve always considers that course to be one of my favorites at Mac, all because of him. I have been humbled in his presence and knowledge, and am lucky to have known this gentle man. I am sending love and light to his family in these difficult times.

Dr. Goulding lead one of the best courses I took at MacMurray College – Biomedical Ethics. Unfortunately, I only took one of his classes. In my opinion he was the best kind of professor – he thoroughly understood the subject, he could distill complex notions and present them in a way which was easily understood and he would effectively facilitate class discussions on consequential subject matters. His teaching style encouraged open discussions and through his questioning I gained appreciation for all points of view. When I took a position in class or in a written assignment, Dr. Goulding would require substantiation – I could not take comfort in one-liners like “that is just the way I feel.” Over the years I have either discarded or lost most of my MacMurray College textbooks and lecture notes. The textbooks and lecture notes for my Biomedical Ethics class (circa 1979) are on my home office bookshelf. From time-to-time I dust them off and take a trip down memory lane. To the family and friends of Dr. Goulding, I offer my condolences. Bill Hembree – MacMurray College – Class of 1981
