Emelie D Howells

MADISON – Emelie D. Howells, age 83, of Madison, passed away peacefully on Monday, Aug. 10, 2020, at Meriter Hospital. She was born on Sept. 26, 1936, in Madison, the daughter of Bennett and Viola (Graves) Severson. Emelie was born and raised in South Madison, and although she would reside in a few other locations in the city over the years, her beloved south side beckoned her back, where she would live out the remainder of her life. Emelie had five children, Shirley, Debbie, Dawn, Tom, and Tina, that she raised nearly all on her own. Though struggles were plenty, she had the ability to make much out of little, and always made her children feel like they lacked nothing. She made car rides on a country road, pitching a tent in the yard, and picnicking at the park, feel like the grandest of vacations. Instilling the love of Jesus in her children was also very important to her, and she did that with the help of the many programs at The Salvation Army. Her door was always open, and her house was often a gathering place, for neighbors to just have coffee, or a safe haven for others in need. She was that nonjudgmental ear you turned to for advice. She viewed herself as someone that just wanted to help. She made friends easily and kept them forever. Emelie enjoyed collecting things, and her interests changed over the years from owls, to giraffes, hummingbirds, and state spoons, to angels. She loved admiring her garden, watching Hallmark Christmas movies, her trips with her brother, Albert, and volunteering. She was especially proud to receive The Presidents Call To Service Award signed by President Barack Obama for her many hours of work. Emelie had 12 grandchildren, Aaron, Dione, Justin, Amelia, Julius, Jacob, Breanna, Tyler, Shaw Jr., Jadon, Zachary and Briana; and 14 great-grandchildren. Her family was her greatest treasures, and she was so proud of them all. She created a special relationship with each one with her humor, generosity, and heart of gold. They will have so many memories to look back on, but a particularly fond one that will be missed is her singing to them. “Hey Good Lookin’” was one of her favorite go-to’s. She wouldn’t have won any awards with her singing, but it would always make you smile, and that was the goal. She will be remembered for not just her big heart, but her colorful language combinations, that were sometimes said in anger, but ended up just being hilarious. Emelie was welcomed to Glory by her parents, and her children that went before her. The family would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers. A Graveside Service will be held at ROSELAWN MEMORIAL PARK, Section O, 401 Femrite Drive, Monona, at 2 p.m. on Monday, August 24, 2020, with Major Steve Kounthapanya officiating. Due to COVID restrictions there is a limited amount of space. Depending on the number of family members in attendance, you may need to remain in your vehicle.
