Obituary

MADISON-Susann S. “Suzy” Griffiths, age 76, of Madison passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday July 26, 2020. She was born on May 6, 1944, to Orville and Loretta Schaffer in Lebanon, Pa. She was part of the Monona Grove class of 1962 and UW Madison class of 1966. There are no real words to describe how wonderful a person Suzy was. She was incredibly involved with her family and friends. She was never without a smile and a laugh. After retiring from the University of Wisconsin Department of Medicine Residency Program in 2008, she kept herself busy with many activities such as: PLATO, volunteering at the Overture Center, University League, Blue Lake Group, “Rummies”, ballet, Bridge and book club to name a few. Her love for the arts and travel was very evident from her trips all around the world (Africa, South America, Italy, England, Iceland, etc.) to her continuous attendance at greater Madison area performing arts. Our lives will be a little less bright and colorful without her. Suzy was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Julie; and brother, Andy Schaffer. She is survived by her loving children, William Griffiths III (Samantha) and Tara Munn (Brad); her grandchildren, Rachel Griffiths, Drew Munn and Alex Munn, who were her world; her sister and brother-in-law, Sara and Mark Melcher; her nephews, Chad Melcher (Kim), Todd Melcher (Holly), Troy Melcher (Missy) and Kyle Melcher (Jenny), as well as her seven great-nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will be held at Overture Center Promenade Terrace, 201 State St., Madison, on Sunday, May 23, 2021 from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations will be used to support the arts in the Madison area. Some of her favorites were The American Players Theatre, Forward Theater, Overture Center and Madison Ballet. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.. I am so very sad to hear about Suzy's passing. We worked together, traveled together, and shared a love for the learners in DOM.. Suzy was a wonderful lady and so many loved her for the compassion and love she constantly gave to anyone who entered her office. I will truly miss that smile, giggle and warm heart she so freely gave to all. My deepest sympathies a go out to her family.

Suzy was always a ray of sunshine and a source of comfort for all medicine residents. I loved her laugh, her smile, and her quirky sense of humor. She taught me to not sweat the small stuff and supported me in sweating the big stuff. Suzy made the world a much better place. She will be deeply missed.

Suzy was a beloved member of our Svaroopa Yoga Community. I used to tease her that she was the most successful retired person I knew - whether it was a Plato class, a play or spending time with her family, she was always on the go. We had so much fun and I treasure our time together.

Suzy, both as a program coordinator for our residency program and as a fellow human being, always had an open door for us during our internal medicine training at UW Madison. She has left an indelible impression on all the trainees with whom she had connected. Also, her time spent as an usher at the Overture Center was a nice departure from the work environment to see and talk to her. :-).

I knew Suzy from the UW Fitness Center. Like me, she was a deep water exerciser. Our classes were early morning, but I always looked forward to her cheerful attitude and energy. Somehow, she made the cold water seem a bit warmer than it was. We laughed a lot and probably talked too much, ignoring the instructor. It was not unusual for one us to ask, "What exercise are we supposed to be doing?" Then we'd laugh again at ourselves. I was always so impressed with her many activities and interests. She went on a safari glamping in Africa! She was sad this would have been her last summer at Grandparent's University because her youngest grandchild was aging out of the program. All of us at the Fitness Center will miss her.
