Obituary
STOUGHTON, Wis. - Scott A. Hernstine, son, big brother, brother-in-law, uncle, and friend passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg. He was born on January 24, 1965, in Stoughton, to Delwyn and Diane (Alshouse) Hernstine. Scott graduated from Stoughton High School in 1983 and furthered his education at both MATC and UW-Whitewater.
Scott’s love of both cars and trucks lead to his career in the parts department at the GM dealerships of Dvorak, Meier and Don Miller. His love of vehicles extended to his boat, snowmobile and motorcycle along with the corresponding activities related to them all. The outdoors was always a passion of Scott’s, where he spent countless hours fishing and hunting. He was a true outdoorsman. Scott was also an avid reader and quickly consumed books, especially those by Stephen King.
In 2011, his life and hobbies shifted as he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After the first brain surgery in 2011, he was left disabled but continued living on his own in his house. He enjoyed Thursday morning breakfast with his dad, going to the lake house with family, watching NASCAR racing and the Green Bay Packers, and spoiling all of the beloved family dogs. Scott loved being an uncle to Alex and Evan, and always lit up whenever he was with them. In 2020, a second brain surgery left Scott with additional disabilities, leading to a move into a long-term care facility. During his time in the nursing care facility, he made many wonderful friends whom he considered family.
Scott is survived by his mother, Diane; sister, Kristen (Brad) Krause; and his nephews, Alex Krause and Evan Scott Krause (namesake of Scott). He is further survived by aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Del; maternal grandparents, Marvin and Grace Alshouse; paternal grandparents, Joseph and Pauline Hernstine; and aunts, uncles and beloved family dogs.
In honoring Scott’s wishes, there will be no public funeral or visitation. A private family interment will occur next spring at Riverside Cemetery in Stoughton.
Scott’s family would like to thank everyone who provided support during this difficult time, including Katlynn Kelley, Michael, and Gina of Belmont, Dr. Craig, and many others too numerous to name. In honoring Scott, please consider a donation to the Dane County Humane Society where his beloved dog, Sam, came from.
Thanks for always having my back and being my big brother!
Scott, you are now free to walk, run and do anything you want with no physical obstacles in your way ever again. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.
