Obituary

MADISON-Joy A. Koth, age 69, passed away on Monday, May 11, 2020. She was born on June 13, 1950, in Green Bay, the daughter of Frank and Willamine (Vetter) LaMere. Joy worked for Wisconsin Bell, which became AT&T, for over 35 years. She loved traveling and camping with family and friends and spending her winters in Florida. Joy enjoyed cheering on her kids at all of their sporting events. She became an avid Milwaukee Brewers fan later in life and loved to tailgate. She was famous for her lemon poppy seed cake and strawberry jam. An avid gardener and the family handyman, she was happiest with a gardening tool or hammer in her hands. She was a wonderful grandma and enjoyed caring for her grand-dogs. Her generous heart, quick wit and carefree nature impacted everyone who met her. She will be truly missed by all of those who knew her. Joy is survived by her husband, Larry; daughters, Lauren (Zach) Thorne and Terri (Mike, Lucas and Josie) Alm; son, Erin Koth; granddaughter, Alyssa Krause; father, Frank; sisters, Nan (Jim) Headrick, Beth (Don) Kleczewski and Lisa (Kos) Kosbab; and brothers, Paul (Karen) LaMere, Bruce LaMere and Tim LaMere. She was preceded in death by mother, Willamine. This was a sudden and unexpected loss; the family would like to thank Joy and Larry's neighbors and the EMTs who were with her in her final moments. They would also like to thank everyone near and far for their support during this difficult time. There will be a small private visitation and a life celebration will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family requests that any contributions be made to The Goodman Community Center or local food bank of choice. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com. As Joy's neighbors, we feel so fortunate to have experienced her deep love of the outdoors and her nurturing way of being. It felt like there was never a day that she wasn't out in the backyard tending to her plants, sitting on the deck just taking in the trees and the fresh air, or taking off for or returning from her garden plot. The happiness that Joy experienced in these spaces was so apparent, and it always put a smile on our face and warmth in our hearts. It also allowed us to feel very close to Joy, as we would often be out puttering within our own yard, just a few feet away. Working quietly alongside each other on an interest we both shared, punctuated every now and again with a comment to one another about the weather or whatever was going on that day. We have such fond memories of these everyday, yet incredibly meaningful and comforting moments. Every conversation we have ever had with Joy has been full of warmth, care, or humor - or all of the above. She was an incredible person, neighbor and friend. We will so dearly miss Joy, her beautiful laugh, and the aura of goodness she carried with her. Though I think we will always have a bit of Joy in us whenever we tend to our gardens. - Carrie & Rashauna

Larry, so very sorry to hear about Joy. It has been awhile but I will always remember her infectious smile at the softball games and after parties. Thinking of you and your family at this terrible time. Be well my old friend. Jim Neely

I have a beautiful Florida garden because of Joy.  She kept pushing me to plant a vegetable garden, ignoring my hesitation.  As a Michigan transplant, I had my doubts about what I could grow in FL heat.  I held off.  Resolute, Joy brought me herb plants to nudge me along.  I still held off.  She brought me jams and salsas from her garden efforts up north and lots of conversation about gardening.  She finally won.  This March I got started.   She was so pleased with my efforts.  Slowly looking over my plants one by one she just smiled, and said “You’re getting your green thumb”.  I’m so happy she was here to share this with me. Joy was a kind, generous, and authentic friend.  I will keep her with me always.

Joy's many gifts I remember: her thirst for a fair and just society and her willingness to commiserate my many rants; her thoughts she shared; her many kindnesses to contribute, and help out: the trips to Green Bay to do Dad's laundry to just be together - invariably bringing a meal to feed whoever show up; always available to sit and visit; her many baked goods, that, despite meticulous tutoring, could not be replicated; her annual produce easily pilfered, or even delivered personally upon request... In retrospect, there are so many acts of Joy, large and small, that ripple through my life and Family that will be deeply missed... And I remain forever grateful and blessed for having been a part of her life... Joy's gentle and kind soul will be forever missed...My condolences and deepest sympathy to Larry, Erin, Lauren, friends and extended family...

I AM SORRY TO SEE JOY HAS PASSED. I JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT THIS LAST WEEK BUT WORKED ON THE SAME CREW WITH HER AT WISCONSIN BELL AND SHE WAS SUCH AN EASY PERSON TO GET ALONG WITH. CERTAINLY A BIG LOSS FOR HER FAMILY.
