Obituary
Pardeeville - Shelby Jean Hoon, age 77, of Pardeeville, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2020 at UW Hospital and Clinics surrounded by her children. She was born on February 8, 1943, in Waunakee, WI, the daughter of Joseph and Barbara (Wilke) Laufenberg. Shelby was a graduate of Waunakee High School.
Thanks to Mom, we were allowed all variety of pets growing up. There may have been a few lizard escapes, flea infested stray cats, doggie escape artists and messy birds but she never hesitated to say yes when we asked to add to our pet family. Besides teaching us the responsibilities of owning pets, Mom taught us to share our pets with little old ladies who were lonely and needed a friend on their farm more than we did.
Mom was great at springing us out of school and Dad out of work on Fridays to go on awesome adventures. She taught us so much on these adventures; how to remove a bull head from a fishing hook, how to swing on tree roots over the stream through Parfrey’s Glen, how to climb the bluffs in the rain at Wyalusing State Park, and how to win water fights while camping with all of our aunts, uncles and cousins. If we didn’t get wet and hang pants out the car window to dry, we weren’t having fun. We had a lot of fun!
Mom loved her road trips! Whether you were on a day trip with her or going to her dream destinations of New Orleans or South Dakota you were required to wear a road trip hat. The sloppier the hat, the better. Mom enjoyed the time she had to talk to whoever came along for the ride and then sharing her slide show to music of all the Kwik Trips they saw along the way.
It was always fun to hear her tell you about the birds she was seeing on her deck. It was more amazing when you sat with her and saw for yourself. She and her sister Diane were great at identifying the varieties of birds.
Mom’s final goal in life was to see Donald Trump voted out of office in November. She knew she wouldn’t be here to see this happen. So, she made everyone caring for her promise to think of her in November, vote and help her reach that goal.
Mom loved all of her family and took great pride in her children, grandchildren, brothers and sisters. There will always be a hole in our hearts that won’t be filled until we see her again.
Survivors include her son, Wally (Mary) Hoon, her daughter, Cindy (Ron) Riggs and son, Adam (Debbie) Hoon; four grandchildren, Jacob, Dylan, Logan, and Lola Hoon; 8 siblings; ex-husband, Walt Hoon; and many other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, and 5 brothers. A Celebration of Shelby's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Lung Association or the National Audubon Society.
