Bertha Day

MADISON-Bertha Ann (Flom) Day, age 87, of Madison, passed away on Monday, March 23, 2020, at her home with her oldest daughter, her caregiver, by her side. Bertha was born on Feb. 24, 1933, to the late Andy and Hazel (Harrison) Flom. Bertha married Richard Day from Madison on March 24, 1951, in Iowa. Bertha is survived by her six children, Helaine Hartley of Madison, Duane (Debbie) Day of Evansville, Wis., Cathy Day of San Anselmo, Calif., Cindy (James) Hilmershausen, of Wausau, Wis., Robert (Margie) Day of McFarland, Wis., and Steven (Mary) Day of Delafield, Wis. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Charles (Tracey), Daniel (Stefanie), Aaron, Ethan, Andrew, Makenna (Chris), Nicole, Madison and Kaylee; her great- grandchildren, Kyle, Blake and Blair; her niece, Jean French; and great-nephew, Eddie; brother-in-law, Ted Femrite; and numerous nieces and nephews. Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, Andy and Hazel Flom; her husband, Richard; brother, Edward Flom; sister-in-law, Opal Flom; nephew, Carl Flom; and numerous brothers and sisters-in-law. Bertha grew up on Lake Waubesa in Edwards Park. She attended East High School and worked at Wisconsin Telephone, Sears, Beeline, Rennebohm’s, and retired from JCPenney. Bertha was our rock, a gentle soul with a loving heart who cheered on all our accomplishments and hugged away all our disappointments. She had a love of the outdoors, canoeing, kayaking, and hiking. Bertha was an advocate of service, school programs, a Girl Scout leader, and a Sunday school teacher at Messiah Lutheran Church. We will miss her dearly and are grateful for all our loving memories. Private Service will be held at her graveside followed by a Celebration of Life at a later date.
