Sylvia Pauline Wiensch

Obituary
MADISON - Sylvia Pauline Wiensch passed away peacefully on Friday, March 20, 2020, with her two children holding her hands. Pauline was born in Chippewa Falls, Wis. on the second of January. She attended a one room school in Chippewa County, Wis. Spending her senior year in high school living in Anchorage, Alaska, she had great adventures and graduated as the salutatorian of her class. After high school she attended and graduated from the Minneapolis School of Art. In 1952, she married the late Dale J. Wiensch. Over the years, Pauline worked as a clothing designer, real estate agent, and most importantly, a full-time mother. Believing in giving to the community and those less fortunate, Pauline also worked as a volunteer hospice worker, adult literacy tutor, for the National Wildlife Health Center, and in many other volunteer positions throughout her lifetime.
Pauline was a very loving person, especially loving children. She was a wonderful mother and adored her grandchildren. She was a kind and compassionate person, voracious reader, NY Times crossword puzzle player, accomplished bridge player, beautiful knitter, and someone always up for an adventure. Pauline had a great sense of humor and loved hearing a good joke. She instilled in her children the love of reading, and spent countless hours reading to her grandchildren. Her sage advice was to seize the moment and not be afraid to try new things and take advantage of opportunities that knock on your door. “Don’t live your life with regrets for the opportunities you failed to take.” She also recommended physical work when feeling low, saying “If you’re feeling down, get up and clean your house.” Toward the end of her life, the only card game she could play was Kings in the Corners, which she played enthusiastically. She was loved by her family, who will always miss her.
Pauline is survived by her children, Tom Wiensch (Cheryl Campbell) of Rhinelander, Wis. and Ann (Guy) Wilson of Madison; her grandchildren, Carly Wilson and Austin Wilson, both of Madison; and her brother, David Raihle of Chippewa, Falls. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, Paul H. Raihle and Sylvia C. Raihle (nee Havre); her brother, Richard Raihle; and her sisters, June Esklund and Alys Melton.
Due to the national health emergency, there can’t be a funeral for Pauline at this time. As a memorial to her, we ask you to reach out to others during this trying time in our world. Some suggestions are to check on your elderly or lonely neighbors, donate to a food pantry, volunteer with Meals on Wheels, or donate blood. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

I loved Aunt Pauline - this can’t be easy and I’m praying for you all. Putting out some sun tea this afternoon. My favorite memory - well it’s the fair isle sweater. Second is listening to her and my mom laugh while playing cards.

My friendship with Pauline and Dale began In the Elvehjem neighborhood on Madison's east side. The neighbors were looking for couples who might be interested in playing bridge at one another's homes. We played with them for several years and that led to some of the women getting together in addition to playing in the couples group. When Dale passed away we continued to play regularly and were sorry when she eventually moved to the west side and no longer played with us. I am still enjoying playing bridge with several of the women who no longer live in the neighborhood but who still get together somewhere on the east side to play bridge! However we have never forgotten her. She was a wonderful, kind and compassionate person.
Please accept my condolences and know that my bridge friends and I will celebrate her life! We may not be able to get together as a large group but two tables of bridge only means eight of us so we won't be breaking any rules!
My loving memories and prayers are ever with her entire family.

OH my goodness, I am so sorry to hear of Pauline’s passing. OH, how we all loved her. The Endres family lived 3 door down from her on Amsterdam and Marty and I enjoyed bringing our kids over to swim in their pool. Pauline and Dale were such good friends and absolutely adored having our kids over at thei house. Our grown children still remember them so fondly. Pauline and I would play card, have an occasionally drink and when she moved onto the lake (can’t think of the street at this moment, we also went on the Ponton boat with her with our kids! Oh, Dale and Pauline would dearly loved in our neighbor and I hope you will contact us if there is a service, I think we would love to be there to celebrate her and Dale. We loved them dearly. With sympathy and warm regards at her passing, , Nancy and Marty Endres, now living at 906 Harrington Drive, Madison, WI. 53718 We loved Dale and Pauline...!!!
