Scott was born on Sept. 17, 1946, in Ishpeming, Mich. He graduated from Ishpeming High School and went on to receive a bachelor's degree from Northern Michigan University with a double major in political science and economics. Scott moved to Racine, Wis., to begin a teaching career, later settling in Monona. He taught government in Sun Prairie, Wis., until his retirement. Growing up in Upper Michigan, Scott was a Yooper through and through. As he often commented, "You can take the boy out of the U.P. but you can't take the U.P. out of the boy." As a lifelong Michigan sports fan, he was a proud "Wolverine". Scott loved spending time visiting with friends and family; sharing jokes, stories, and fond memories of his boyhood. He will be remembered as a person who took a sincere interest in others. Scott was the husband of Pam (Froiland) Holmgren for 50 years; father to Erik (Anne) and Kirstin (Rick) Holmgren; and grandfather to three wonderful grandchildren, Allie, Matson and Josie Holmgren. Scott is also survived by his brother, Doug (Randi) Holmgren; sister, Jan (Jim) Moyle; and nieces, nephews and extended family. Funeral services for Scott Holmgren have been canceled at this time due to the unprecedented health concerns. A memorial gathering will be held at a later date. Please visit www.gundersonfh.com for service updates and we encourage you to share your online condolences with Scott’s family. The family thanks Dr. Albert Musa, Dr. Rory Makielski, and Agrace HospiceCare, and all their staff, for the compassionate care Scott received. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Agrace HospiceCare or the Dane County Humane Society. Gunderson East Funeral & Cremation Care 5203 Monona Drive (608) 221-5420

Scott was one of the original NMU college car pool guys - Scott, John, Neil and Tom, who took turns driving from Ishpeming to Marquette for the 4 years needed to graduate. He was always kind and thoughtful and appreciated for his loyal friendship. Tom Q.

My most sincere sympathies to Scott’s family. My mother was a Holmgren and Scott and I often talked about our connection. We played on the same sports teams and against each other. Both experiences were positive and we were friends after the game. Our 1967 road trip to California would have made a great book about 3 Yooper boys learning about the world beyond the UP. I will always have those memories and will be happy to have had time with Scott. Keep your memories front and center and he will always be with you.

My deepest condolences to your whole family and especially to my "little sister" Pam. The picture of Scott cooking brats at the big Fourth of July get-together still resides on the big picture board at the cabin on Little Bass as does one of your mom. Love to all of you. Cousin Anne

Scott was a good childhood friend. He and family lived one block up on Spruce Street. He was three years older than I was but always included me in his group of friends. I remember fondly the wiffle ball games in the CCI parking lot next to his house. Scott was a great Tiger fan and we would follow the exploits of Stormin' Norman Cash (Scott was also a first baseman) and Al Kaline in their seemingly futile attempts to beat the Yankees for the American League Crown. I remember going downstate to watch Scott play Garden City in a state Babe Ruth League playoff game. The last time I saw Scott was with a group of former Ishpeming High School athletes (including Doug Pertunen and Fritz Ameen) when we attended the Ishpeming Sports players one summer. Scott was a big part of my growing up and has made a lasting impression. Condolences and good memories to the family.
