Obituary
MADISON - Roberta Lynn Gryniewski, age 68, of Madison, passed away on Friday, Dec. 18, 2020, at her home that was filled with love, trust, memories, and promises for the future. She was born on May 8, 1952, in Gary, Ind., the daughter of Robert and Ella (Mason) Tyler. Roberta proudly served in the U.S. Army starting at the age of 18 and most enjoyed working in the field of social services throughout her life.
Our mother was a fierce being who always found a way to overcome the most overwhelming of life’s challenges. Not every battle can be won with grace, but she made sure to hold on to shards of shattered pride along the way. She used those shards to create her own path in this world, and just by doing so she encouraged those around her to do the same. She did not have everything she wanted, but she offered everything that she had to those whom she loved.
Even though she was a wild child, she still had an endless well of love for her family. She was a single mom who figured out how to be a superhero and a sister who figured out how to be a matriarch. When she became a grandmother, she found even deeper depths of love and guidance to give to those she cherished. She imbibed much of her strength from her extensive collection of records and would fill the house with happiness and hope with her dancing and off pitch singing.
She was a woman who experienced an unfathomable amount of trauma but kept picking herself up and fighting for her future, and the future of those whom she loved. It is from her that her children learned to stubbornly fight for what they want and to never stop thinking about what they could achieve next. Some people called her a bit of an oddball, and we are thankful every single day that she saw the world the way that she did. This came out in so many inspiring ways, from how she decorated for the holidays to how she loved to visit graveyards so that she could imagine the life stories of those laid to rest there.
Roberta warrior queen is survived by two daughters, Annette (Travis, Sr.) Crowder and Josie Montañez-Tyler; grandchildren, Briana, Tiana, Tyrone James, Taleena, Travis, Falyn, Xander, Anthony, Andrew, Anastasia, Estacree, Zendraya, Tyrone Artum, Josfina; and great-grandchildren, Anika-Rae and Aliya. She is further survived by her cherished siblings, Jenny, Nola, Junior, Dora, and Laura; aunt, Frances; and her many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by mother, Ella Bertha (Mason) Tyler; her father, Robert Tyler, Sr.; sister, Joyce; brother, James; sister, Zena; and her only son, Tyrone Peterson, Jr.

Afterglow
I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one.
I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done.
I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways,
Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days.
I’d like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun;
Of happy memories that I leave when life is done.

Josie and family, What a beautiful and touching tribute to your mother. The world needs more women like her, warriors who soldier on through all the hardships in life to uncover all the joy. May her spirit live on in all of you, always. My deepest sympathy to you and your family.
