Obituary

OREGON - Cheryl A. Mortensen, age 80, of Oregon, Wis., passed away unexpectedly on June 25, 2024. Cheryl grew up on a farm in Mount Hope, Wis. After graduating from Oregon High School, she met her loving husband, David, and they spent the next 57 years together raising their three children. Cheryl worked at various libraries in the Oregon School District for many years during which time she developed many long-lasting friendships.

Cheryl loved spending time with her family on vacations, girls shopping weekends and other special events. She looked forward to taking day trips with the “gambling grannies” as they were lovingly referred to, and liked to pass on tips of the trade to her children and grandchildren when there were slot machines available for a lesson. Cheryl was a crafter and would often be found knitting, crocheting, or making fleece tie blankets which every one of her family members curls up with on a cool evening. She also kept herself busy with frequent breakfasts and card games with friends. Simply sitting and chatting with family and friends made her smile.

Cheryl was a compassionate, gracious, and kind-hearted woman. While grateful she has found peace and will be reunited with her husband, she will be forever loved and missed.

Cheryl is survived by her children, Mark (Ruth) Mortensen, Dea (Robert) Schaller and Marsha (Seanan) Tesar; her five grandchildren, Tyler (Jess) Mortensen, Shania Mortensen, Emily (Alex) Drake, Samantha Schaller and Nicholas Schaller; her sister, Karen Owen; as well as her niece and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Mortensen; and her parents, Chester and Marian Abrams.

Visitation will be held at Gunderson Oregon Funeral and Cremation Care, 1150 Park St., Oregon, from 12 noon until 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16, 2024. A graveside service will follow at Prairie Mound Cemetery in Oregon. The family invites anyone who wishes to celebrate Cheryl’s life to join them for food and drinks at the funeral home after the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Agrace HospiceCare or the American Cancer Society. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

I had the opportunity to work with Cheryl for 8 years at OMS. She always had a smile and was willing to share her knowledge. When you heard her laugh no matter where you were in the building it would make you pause and wish you were part of that conversation. My sympathy to the entire family. Kris Heaton
