Obituary

BROOKLYN - Esther Mary Schmid, age 97, of Brooklyn, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2022, at Meriter Hospital. She was born on Sept. 1, 1925, in Madison, Wis., the daughter of Carl and Alma (Zingg) Raemisch.

Esther grew up on the Raemisch family farm on the west side of Madison. She attended St. James Catholic School in Madison and graduated from Verona High School. She later attended Madison Business College and worked for Rennebohm Drug Store and later Bill Goff, Inc.

She married Sanford (Sandy) Schmid on Feb. 20, 1946, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. She and Sandy and their children lived on the farm with her brother, Charles, his wife Mary Ellen and their children. In 1970, Esther, Sandy and their sons moved to their Brooklyn, Wisconsin farm, which is still in family operation today by family members living on the farm.

Esther loved going dancing with Sandy and their group of friends. They enjoyed waltzes, polkas, fox trots and two steps and taught their children and friends how to dance. Esther and Sandy were so graceful on the dance floor! Especially when dancing to one of their favorite songs, The Blue Skirt Waltz.

One of Esther's favorite pastimes was gardening. First was food, with planting, picking and preserving vegetables and fruits from the garden. She also loved wild harvesting raspberries, blackberries, black walnuts from woodlands and roadsides. She enjoyed strawberry picking each summer, to freeze and preserve for the whole year. Esther loved her flower beds with many flowers blooming spring, summer and fall. Lilacs in the spring were a favorite!

Esther is survived by her children, Karen (Dennis) Coyier, Cheryl K. (Phil Owen) Schmid, Paul (Winona) Schmid and Russell (Amy) Schmid; grandchildren, Lila (Brad) Klahn and Alex (Melanie) Coyier, Karleen Eberle and Annaliese (Denis Akamine) Eberle, Adam (Nicole) Schmid, Jeni (Steve) Weisheit, and Leah (Stefan Buhalog) Schmid, and Ryan Schmid, Garrett (Hailey) Schmid and Devon Schmid; seven great-grandchildren, Brooke, Logan, Alexa, Jamie, Bradley, Azik and Dawsyn; brother-in-law, Wilbert Schmid; sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Raemisch; and many extended family members. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sanford Schmid; parents; brother Charles Raemisch; sister Pat (Andy) Hendrickson; and Sandy’s family, William and Clara (Skogen) Schmid, Delmar (Charlene) Schmid, Dorothea (Dick) Featherston, Glenn Schmid, Jytte Schmid and many extended family and friends.

Esther always held a special place in my heart and mind. She was the matriarch among all of the Schmid clan and will be greatly missed.

Esther and Sandy and their family were such great neighbors in the "Maple Grove Road" area. I think of them and all the Raemisch, Schmid, Doerfer, Maurer, Weiland, Nesbitt, Newell, Kitzke, and other neighbors often when I drive by where the farms were. I knew they enjoyed dancing so much. One of Dad's (Jerry Maurer) favorite dances was "The Blue Skirt" waltz too. May Esther and Sandy be dancing to it in Heaven. Our deepest sympathy.

In the late seventies /early eighties, Esther was our "corn lady". She supplied our family with enough corn to freeze, tomatoes to can and the best melons. The kids were allowed to visit the barn and I was allowed to visit her kitchen. She was the hardest working woman that I knew. Her hands were always stained with dirt and filled with enlarged joints because of constant work. Later in life I had the privilege of taking care of her as she rehabbed from her hip replacement. My adult daughter and my grandchildren were able to visit Esther. about 8 years ago. She still had those knarled strong hands and gleam in her eye. She and Sandy were quite a team. She will always have a warm spot in my heart. Now she can finally rest.

I first met Esther when my son, Paul, did farm chores for the Schmid family. What a dear sweet lady with a heart of gold. Later years I had the honor of cleaning her home. So many times I left her home with a loaf of homemade bread or rolls. I enjoyed listening to her stories of when she was younger and working on the farm. What a hard worker she was! Helping outside and caring for her home and children. I enjoyed our visits at church. She would always ask about my family. I'm so blessed to have know such a wonderful lady as Esther. My sympathy to her family.
