Obituary
MADISON - Daniel Peter Huegel, age 67, of Madison, passed away on Sept. 26, 2019, while in hospice care. He was born on Sept. 10, 1952, in Waukesha, Wis., the son of Owen and Janette (Lund) Huegel. He graduated from Hartland Arrowhead High School in 1970, and continued his education at Carroll College in Waukesha, where he graduated suma cum laude in 1974. He then went to Pennsylvania State University for graduate work, achieving a Doctorate degree in Geography.
After a brief time as a geography professor at Northern Illinois University, he moved to Madison to take a job as a researcher and analyst with the Wisconsin Department of Revenue. He continued in that job until his retirement. He enjoyed his pet cat, long walks in parks or around Madison, studying the stock market, weather science, the Great Plains and classical music. He also loved picking a direction on the compass, getting in his car, and seeing where that would take him.
Daniel is survived by his sister, Betsy Huegel. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Dan and I worked very closely as I was a lobbyist for Cities and Dan was an expert with a formula for State Shared Revenue. We became friends as he taught me about the program. We also talked about the State of Pennsylvania laws as well. He was a joy to work with and an outstanding man. I recently advised a graduate student writing her Masters' thesis to seek out Dan's advice and knowledge. My thoughts and prayers are for the family. He will be missed. God Bless this gentle soul!

Mourning the loss of Dan and sending condolences to you, Betsy. I am one of 3 daughters of John A Huegel (1932-1999) He and his brother William (also deceased) were the sons of Arthur John and Carol Mortimer Huegel. I believe your dad, Owen, was Arthur’s brother, so that would make you John and Bill’.s cousin. Betsy, I would love to reconnect with you - I remember you and Dan along with your parents and all the other Huegel boys. I live in Madison, but can’t come to the visitation on Wednesday because of work. If you want to contact me, please do: kathy@cpcmadison.org
Thinking of you - sorry I never knew that Dan was in Madison!

I'm so sorry to hear of Dan's passing. In high school, my locker was right next to Dan's so we often greeted each other throughout the day. I was so happy to read where his life took him after high school. Such a brilliant, kind sole. My deepest sympathies.

So sorry to hear this. I occasionally chatted with Dan over property tax issues and matters of public school finance. He was a smart, humorous guy, finding irony in almost every situation. I agree.....a bright and kind guy.

Hello Betsy,
I'm sorry to hear of Dan's passing, and I'm sorry I couldn't attend the service today.
I worked in the same office with Dan for over 5 years at Revenue. He was always so nice to me. I retired about 6 months ago, so didn't know about Dan's illness. I wish he could have had a long retirement. It was way too short. I always looked forward to talking to him at work. -Carey Fleischmann, 7510 Hillcrest Ave, Middleton, WI 53562
