Obituary

STOUGHTON - John L. Waring of Stoughton, Wis., passed away peacefully at home on Nov. 11, 2023, surrounded by his family. He was born on Jan. 20, 1944, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Hazel and Lawrence Waring.


John married Patty Hull in 1966 in Chicago, Ill., and together had three children, Michael, Becky and Matthew.


John had many talents. He learned plumbing with his father in Illinois, he was a mechanic in Illinois, a service technician and loved to race cars. He owned and operated many businesses over the years including, Johnny’s Pizza in Wisconsin, an auto mechanic shop in Stoughton, three parts stores, a pool business, Wisconsin Auto Supply, United Lift Handicapped business, a craft business with his wife and Little John’s Mechanical Sewer Drain Cleaning. He was known for his selfless dedication to his customers, making himself available on weekends and holidays. With the business slogan, ‘A straight flush, beats a full house every time.’


John was a proud 32nd Degree Mason and active in the Cooksville Lodge. He found joy in riding in local parades as Crackers the Clown on his tiny motorcycle with the Zor Shrine. His talent for balloon tying was unparalleled. He shared his gift with a pocketful of balloons at the ready to create wonders at a moment's notice.


John is survived by his family, Michael (Melissa Brummer) Rebecca “Becky” Heittola (Elden) and Matthew (Sabrina Carlson); sister, Esther Turner of Texas; and niece, nephews and cousins. John’s extended family: his love, Jean Gjermo; daughter, Samantha Gjermo and grandsons, Parker and Oliver; daughter, Jane Groshan (Steve); sons, Lucas and Derek; and grandchildren, Aurelia, Maggie and Ethan.  


A memorial service will be held at GUNDERSON STOUGHTON FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 1358 Highway 51 N. @ Jackson St., Stoughton, at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 4, 2023.


The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the amazing hospice caregivers.

My condolences to Jean, Becky, Mike and Matt. We have known you all for the better part of 20 years and couldn't ask for better neighbors. John was over fixing our plumbing all the time and always had the right tool for any job I was working on (and more than willing to share). When our kids were little John would make balloon animals for them. Thanks for being a great neighbor John! We will miss you! Our prayers to you and your family during this time. Todd and Kelli Krcma

I remember when the Waring family moved to Evansville and met Johnny first. I learned to love Johnny's pizza and the Waring family. My condolences to the family and friends of Johnny. I pray that you have many wonderful memories to hold onto the love.

I have so many great memories of cousin John growing up. We always loved the times the Warings would come visit or we got to go to Stoughton. My parents spent many late nights with John and Patty, sharing stories, telling jokes, and laughing the night away. John always had a smile and made it a point to ensure everyone else was included and had their chance to laugh too. He always had balloons in his pocket and no matter the creative request, he could make it! One of my favorite memories was the time he let me drive his boat. I couldn’t have been more than 5 and it was my scariest and most thrilling moment all in one. This picture is with my brother, Steve, on one of our trips to Stoughton and exemplifies John’s love for life and people. I know he and my mom and Patty are rejoicing together and sending their big laughs throughout heaven. Sending love and prayers of peace and comfort to my cousins Mike, Becky, Matthew and their entire family. Love you all!

Sorry to hear of Johnnys passing, my memory of Johnny always having a cigarette in waiting behind his ear. I considered him as a friend and he made the best pizza I've ever eaten to this very day . Rest in peace my old friend. Condolences to his family.
