Obituary

MADISON - John Joseph Brendler Sr., age 88, of Madison, Wis., went to his heavenly home on Wednesday April 2, 2025. He was born on January 6, 1937, in Blooming Grove, son of Louis and Kathryn (Trainor) Brendler.

At the age of 18 (1955) he met the love of his life, Amy Voges, and they married in 1958 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. He joined the U.S. Army in 1959 and was stationed in Tacoma Wash., for 2 ½ years. He was discharged in July of 1961 and returned to Madison to care for his parents and start a family.

John worked as a regional truck driver and was a proud member of Teamsters Local 695 until his retirement in 1994. He then became an usher for UW athletic games for 14 years. He, along with his wife Amy, were active members at St. Matthew’s and Messiah Lutheran Church.

He enjoyed growing up with three active brothers, cared for animals and enjoyed the outdoors. In his later years he enjoyed going to classic car shows and photographing his favorite cars. He was an avid postcard collector and was an historian of the east side of Madison.

John is survived by his beautiful children, Laurie (Bob) Howard and John Jr. (Tina) Brendler; grandchildren, Tyler (Kyleigh) Brendler, John (Briana) Howard, Christi (Corey) Mason, Joe (Alex) Howard and Joshua (Noel) Brendler; great-grandchildren, Everlee, Bo, Reece, Jack, Madison, Lilli, Christien and Baby B.; brother-in-law, Dan Voges; sister-in-law, Maribeth (Jim) Stone; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Kathryn (Trainor) Brendler; his wife, Amy; and brothers, Eugene, Chuck and Louis Jr.

John considered his greatest accomplishments to be: married 64 years, two wonderful children and their spouses, five amazing grandchildren and their spouses, and seven+ great-grandchildren. He also loved his many grand pets throughout the years.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Agrace HospiceCare (www.agrace.org) in honor of his wife, Amy, or to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org) would be appreciated by the family.

At John's request, there will not be a visitation or funeral, and we would ask that you reflect upon your cherished memories of him. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.

My Hero, My Papa By: Christi They say ‘never meet your heroes’ well I knew mine for 31 years. A man of faith, a man of humor, a man who faced life standing tall with very little fears. A man of great wisdom, a man who cared, a man who touched many lives with all the love that he shared. When they say “you have big shoes to fill”, well My Papa filled his all the way. I am a proud Grand daughter when I think of him every single day. He was there always for the big moments and small, my wedding day, graduation and even to come see me play ball. He never missed a chance to tell me how proud he is of me And when I look back I feel those simple words really helped shape me. His belief in me never wavered his love always known. My hero is my papa-and the light he has shown.

My condolences to the family of John. I got to know John and Amy when I worked as church secretary and St. Matthew's Lutheran church on Dempsey Road. I enjoyed both of them very much. the last time I talked with John was at the Dean House when he talked about growing up in the township of Blooming Grove. Mary Tygum

Dear Laurie and John. You don't know me, but My wife and I knew your folks well. They were such a loving couple. Your Dad and I served on Teamster Local 695's Executive board together and he steered me in the right direction when I was first appointed. He was a great person and I will always remember his kindness! Our deepest sympathy!
