Obituary

MADISON – Leroy “Lee” Virnig, age 77, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2020. He was born on Feb. 8, 1942, the son of Martin and Lucille (Finn) Virnig. Lee graduated from Central High School in Madison. He married Judith “Judy” Thuesen on June 24, 1961. Lee worked as an auto body specialist for thirty years. After that, Lee proudly worked for the DeForest Area School District as a custodian for fourteen years. He had an unmatched work ethic, retiring only after being diagnosed with cancer. In his free time he loved being with his family, going fishing and appreciated anything that had to do with cars. Lee enjoyed taking Judy to a good Friday night fish fry, but especially loved going out for breakfast with family and friends. Lee is survived by his wife, Judy; daughters, Christine (Rico) Carlson, Debra (William Paul) Blair and Kathleen (Joseph) Gillitzer; brothers, Raymond Virnig and James (Susan) Virnig; sisters, Beverly Kneebone, Janet (Donald) Spilde and Karen (Bill) Anderson; in-laws, Patricia Doran, Lloyd Perry and Joanne Thuesen; grandchildren, Zachary (Hillary) Blair, Clay Blair, Holly (Greg) Mair, Erica (Derek Jensen) Carlson, Brooke Gillitzer and Anthony Gillitzer; great-grandchildren, Kendyll Blair, Landon Blair, Wyatt Blair, Finley Mair, Everly Mair and Lorelei Jensen; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; Martin and Lucille Virnig, father- and mother-in-law, Benny and Rose Thuesen; brothers-in-law, John Thuesen, Robert Doran, Ernest Haensgen and Stan Woods; and sisters-in-law, Donna Perry, Rosemarie Haensgen and Darlene Virnig. The family extends a special thank you to Dr. Anne Traynor, Jessica, and the staff at the Carbone Cancer Center. Also, Megan, Kerri, and the whole staff at Agrace HospiceCare. A Celebration of Life will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL AND CREMATION CARE, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, 2020. I didn’t see Leroy very often in later years, but I remember him at family gatherings and the years we lived on Breslend Ct. Truly, he was the kindest, gentlest and most humble of men. So sorry for his passing, but happy he is no longer in pain, and is in peace.

To brother Ray and family, I didn't know Leroy but was a friend and zoo co-worker with Ray. I'm sorry to hear of yet another death within the family. My thoughts and prayers are with you Ray.
